Building backlinks through self made free blogs...good idea?

Say I have a site about math worksheets or something. So I make my site, put up like 50 math sheets and want to sell them.

So then I go and make little free blogs like blogspot.mathworksheets.com or something and put a small 1 page of content or something and then link to worksheets. Would these be some decent backlinks just to get started?

I have a niche where like 8 of the top 10 don't have any backlinks, would ANY old backlinks be a good idea to rank quickly?

Thanks!

Yes, that is a really common way to build backlinks.
But building a little bit bigger free blog and then backlinking to that free blog will do even better.

OK, so do the little blogs need unique content? Should I just spin articles and post them with links to my site?

Yes you need unique content. Otherwise, they may get indexed and then removed at some point. If you spin them, I suggest you do it manually at the word and sentence level. The whole process of writing and spinning an article this way takes about an hour once you get used to the process.

You don't need unique content. Nobody "needs" unique content.

Why on earth does wikipedia rank so high? Amazon? NYT?

What books are you people reading?

        I dunno people.

I have free blogs, blogspot mainly, attached to my dot coms.

They are golden for adsense, backlinks, and traffic funneling.

Yup. They blew it with that blogger. They are just waiting for a fall from
the top websites on the planet. Silly google. They sucker people into
creating a free blogspot blog, then WHAM! They bring the hammer down
        on you.

Seriously. Where on earth do you people get this info from? Wait.
Don't tell me. I have no need to know.

I think you misunderstood me, Paul.

I'm saying that getting backlinks from free web 2.0s with no links pointing at them is a waste of time.

          But ranking blogspots...that's another story.

But if you're saying you can rank for tough keywords with web 2.0 property links...then you must be in a niche I've never seen before.

Anybody got a good resource for creating these networks? Does it look natural to google? How much content do you need in these? How long should the articles be? How many pages?

Yes but you need to build backlinks to your free blog. It is easy to create a blog on sites like tumblr, and easy to add high quality content, but it isn't easy making it an authority. You should build backlinks to your private (free) blog network to gain authority, which will in turn give pass authority onto your main site.

It is a great way to build backlinks, but it's not as easy as just creating a free blog and adding one crappy spun or duplicate article, it takes good articles and backlinks.

Yeah, generally those are known as tier one sites. People will build those and then point links at those blogs. They do that to pass link juice to their websites, it's a common way to do SEO.
