Michigan Dentist or Dentist - which to optimize

HI all...

With all the changes in google in the last year (personal results).. do you find its better
to push your links/keywords/optimization to GEO targeted keywords or main keywords..
examples (not real):

Michigan Dentist or Dentist
Michigan Wedding Dj or Wedding Dj
Chicago Tummy Tuck or Tummy Tuck

1st choice or 2nd?

I would really like everyone's opinions... these keywords will be used for local businesses.

    1st choice because not only do you get the value of the keyword, you get localization as well and a form of long tail. #1 is win-win.

      I'd go for Michigan Dentist instead of just Dentist. Same for the others. There is less competition, plus locale could be important in these examples too, and things people would search for.

    Have you tried creating a Google Places account for the local merchants? You can upload pictures of the storefront, a map of his location and even a video of the guy introducing his beautiful assistants.

    If you focus just on backlinking and SEO, your missing out!
