Added private registration and moved to WP - Major SERP drop?

I have a 6 year old website which has been between spots 5-7 on google for a competitive keyword. About two weeks ago I decided to make my registration private and moved to a Worpress and updated some content.

Now I can't even find my site listed anywhere on Google. When I search for my domain name in google the first page they show is my "Privacy Page" so at least I know I am indexed.

Do you think this is the google dance or does moving to a private registration wipe out all my hard work and now I have to start over?

I don't really know. I know sometimes when a site is up and then it is taken down for an extended period it could affect ranking. Other than that, I'm not sure. However, even if you have to start over WP is the way to go nowadays.

Just a Google Dance by the sounds of it. As for private registration you might find you stop getting so called 'hits' from bots around the net which will stop this a little bit, but then you know your visitors are actual visitors

About two weeks ago Google rolled out with a Penguin update. You may want to check that out as I am certain Private Registration and WP will not affect your SEO rankings.

Thanks. It was bad timing I made all these changes right around the same time Google did their updates. Impossible to know for sure what happened.

However, my site was not really SEO optimized and I only had a handful of links so I don't think it was the penguin that got me

You can almost be sure it was Penguin. More so than private registration and WordPress. Most of our clients are WP and a bunch have private registration too - none dropped in rankings.... ....

There are a couple of good posts on WF right now that sort of go over some tactics being used to recover from Penguin -- you might find that your website does in fact do some of the things Google hammered.

I'm just trying to save you time from freaking out over private registration and WordPress and it would only be a Google Dance if you had just built a crap ton of links to your website, which it sounds like you didn't do that either..

        Best of luck!
