What are the best linkbuilding strategies after the latest Panda update?

Lots of websites experienced a massive decrease in traffic and SERP ranking after the latest Panda update or algorithmic change. I've read several articles on how to do linkbuilding after Panda and it seems that almost all strategies are no longer effective.

I'm really confused because I'm just learning SEO. What do you think is the best linkbuilding strategy right now?

I've honestly kept my link building exactly the same... Just diversify link sources

    Use high quality links

    VARY anchor text!

I agree. From what I have read, diversity is very important in every SEO strategy.

        I said quality didn't I!

While relevancy is cool and all sometimes there just aren't enough relevant websites to give you all of the backlinks you need to get to #1

Plus the only NOTICEABLE difference with having a relevant backlink is you may get a few targeted visitors (nothing wrong with that)

Google doesnt leave the spots blank. If your site suffered, someone else got your spot. You cant say lot of sites suffered because for every one site that took the hit there is another one out there which is probably banking after the update.

You gotta keep doing what you are doing consistently and you will be back there in no time. Most people will just give up and thats exactly what Google wants them to do!

Indeed. SEO and linkbuilding is not a destination but a continuing journey. Sometimes, the dizzying pace of Google and the Internet is so fast that it's so hard to keep up - especially for someone like me.

      • These are the results of our multiple tests the other week up until Thursday last week:

Google Penguin has a sub component called the Freshness update. This update allows brand new sites with unique and contextually relevant content posted on a regular basis to rank in Google for the keywords targeted by the sites. We regularly posted unique and relevant content on our sites, and after we posted new content, we did the following:

Google Penguin shows Google now values contextual relevance and social networks more. So, we searched for contextually relevant discussion pages, under contextually relevant sections/categories, of contextually relevant Web forums and online social networks/groups. We contributed relevant and useful info and advice in those discussion pages. We left links, anchored by relevant, diverse, non-money keywords, and these links pointed to our new contextually relevant posts in our sites, in an effort to provide viewers with relevant supplemental content with useful info and advice not found in those discussion pages and in our content contributions there. Our results?

More traffic from those online social communities. Quickly Google-indexed links in those social communities (15 hours average). Quickly Google-indexed linked pages (24 hours on average). Then, we did this:

Submitted our new posts in our sites, as is, to contextually relevant ezine networks and content syndication channels with large active publisher networks, comprised of webmasters regualrly looking for content they can publish on their contextually relevant sites, for the benefit of their viewers. Our results?

More traffic funneled from those sites. Improved page Google SERPs due to contextually relevant onpage links in contextually relevant pages under contextually relevant sections/categories of contextually relevant sites with active readership and mailing list subscriber bases. Quickly Google-indexed links in those sites. Quickly Google-indexed linked pages. Higher chances of more powerful links in those sites, since the owners of those sites and their viewrs will naturally build links pointing to our syndicated content in those sites. Then, we did this:

Searched for contextually relevant sites with large active readership, membership and mailing list subscriber bases comprised of our target viewers. Contacted the owners of those sites and negotiated guest authoring deals with them. They get relevant content with useful info and advice not published elsewhere, in exchange for onpage text links and banner ads pointing to certain contextually relevant pages of our sites. Our results?

More traffic funneled from those sites. Thanks Marx. I agree about the Freshness update since I have experienced that with my blog somehow. My blog is just 2 months old when it reached PR 1. It was a bog achievement for me, because I didn't do much link building on it. I just spent enough time making quality blog posts and sharing them in social networks.

I agree...just keep doing what you are doing.

Right now most of my links are through forums and blog commenting.

A new thing I'm trying out right now is linking my content to other blog sites. Google seems to like that right now. And if you link from one wordpress blog to another wordpress blog...Google even likes it more.

But...the verdict is still out on this, as I have just started doing it.

Well I have realised that what works now may get your site in trouble later. It is best to make quality backlinks yourself (quality means no article spinning and spamming) that way you know your website will stand the test of time. My theory is that social networking backlinks also help seo (but not page rank) even if they are no follow.

Social signals do contribute something for your website. Although it does not help much with page ranking, it gives the search engines a signal that many people like/trust your site.

Latest update is not called Panda but Penguin. Best strategy for link building is a) submit articles in web 2.0 websites and then do social bookmarking of them. It will proved to be of great benefit b) Guest blogging is the latest entrant. Though it is a bit old but penguin prefers it alot.

Thanks Sarah. Yes, I have read that the latest is Penguin. Guest posting entails a more tedious process but it does provide quality, contextual links to your website.

And be social. Links for links sake can be considered SPAM. To avoid this we have to be adding value and leveraging the social media platforms. I am sure there are clever ways to 'workaround' the system but if you have a long term view then it pays to be transparent

I myself is very frustrated with this panga-penguin update. I tried to build links but it seems like my website is just going down in terms of rankings.

One of the link method that i havent tried is guest blogging on high quality site :-)

According to Penguin updates, many links are recognized as unnatural. I think social bookmarking is a new and effective way to improve your SEO.

You need to build high quality unique content, build high quality links from authority sites, build both nofollow and dofollow links, build both one way and two way links. Do not build spammy and mass links. Every thing should be natural as now Google is not just a Program, its totally becoming natural.

I think, now web 2.0 much effective, and try to manually build links from high PR article directories like Ezine, Article base etc...

Here are some tips that might help you...
    1. Go for broad link diversity... links from MANY different domains/IPs
    2. Stay as relevant to your niche as possible
    3. Stay out of bad neighborhoods. Link farms, Forex sites, etc.
    4. Link to internal pages, not just your home page
    5. Vary your anchor text, no more than about 50% your main keyword. Use bare URLs, and phrases like Click Here and Visit Here, etc.
