Try many different methods to get your website to the top of the rankings.

Find out what works and replicate it. If it works over and over again, you are now an expert

      ... and don't give up

First search the forum for on-page SEO info, then apply it to your sites... then search for off-page SEO techniques and apply it to your sites... see what happens, analyze, tweak and repeat. It's a process, but a very interesting one

Personally I think there is no such kind of standard because technology keep changing, search algorithm keep improving.

    flatbro94,
I was exactly where you are now a while I ago, I wanted to learn about SEO but did not know where to start...I actually purchased several SEO training products and then was able to put what was taught into action to see if it worked. You will learn FAR more by DOing than you will by reading about it-so once you have a plan, put it into action and that is where the most valuable training and learning is as you will learn by experience what works and what does not.

The way I progressed in my SEO efforts is by first creating an Affiliate Site and then applying the necessary On Page and Off Page SEO tactics to it.

However, I do suggest that you breakdown the various elements of SEO - Keyword selection, Website Optimization i.e. On Page and then Off Page SEO; One by One and deal with them separately.

    All the best to you

The best thing you can do is test, test and test again.

Don't waste your time buying lots of courses - most of them are by people who talk a good game but cannot get results and many people will tell you something works just because they heard it somewhere or when they tried it 3 years ago it worked.

The only data you can trust is your own.

Focus on results rather than methods. Don't get caught up thinking one methods 'works' just because it worked once. Every situation you come across is a new one that you should approach with fresh eyes and do more testing with.

Just because articles might work in one time for one keyword phrase don't assume they will work for all. And vice versa - just because something didn't work one time, don't assume it never works.

Use your brain - test - and track until you build a set of resources and understanding you can rely on.

My recommendation - pick a keyword phrase you would like to rank for. Set up a squeeze page. Buy 20 domains with that keyword/phrase in and put your squeeze page on each one - then use a different SEO strategy on each domain and see what happens. Track them all and see which strategy gets you the most traffic, which one gets you the most converted traffic (readers/buyers) etc. Then for the strategies that worked best, use them on the other domains and see how they do.

The pick another keyword and do the same again.

Until you know how to get traffic and convert it.

Being an SEO Expert is possible but also understand that is it an ever-changing game. You need to keep up with the SERPS and pretty much learn how to game the system (no matter what anyone tells you).

If you can keep up with all the changes and stick to it...then you should be able to accomplish your goal.

The best way to learn search engine optimization is actually doing it. There is a wealth of information available online. You can start up a simple website on topic you are interested in and start learning and practising SEO on that. There are may good SEO blogs like SEOMoz or SEOBook and you can learn a lot by participating in online forums like WarriorForum. SEO is changing constantly and very fast and there are new practises and guidlines being introduced every week so to keep on top of it all, is to be involved in relevant online communities. I don’t think that actual classroom based training course is needed to learn SEO.

The first thing to start with would be a plain old simple book. I'd recommend "The Art of SEO by Stephan Spencer" but there are probably countless other recommendations for books.

The other thing would be to learn how to do web analytics, so you can measure what you're doing properly. Read the Occams Razor blog by Avinash Kaushik. He'll get you started with figuring out what you should really be measuring on your site.

I think you should apply for a particuar SEO company that can provide the training and knowledge that you need. Depending on the information in the net will not help since many of these sites have different perspectives in terms of correct SEO procedures.

SEO is a very complicated industry because of the rapid shifts and changes in techniques. So, I suggest that you start working for a SEO company first so that you can know the ins and outs of the business which will surely help you in establishing your own SEO company in the future.

        Hi Flatbro94,

There is a saying in the marketing industry, coined by Dr. Flint McGlaughlin "There are no expert marketers; there are only experienced marketers and expert testers". I think the same could be said for SEO so let me say it here:

There are no SEO experts; there are only experienced SEO workers and expert testers.

There is much that can be learned about SEO, but most of what you hear and read is based on nonsense. You will only discover what is true and accurate by testing. So, seek first to become an expert tester, then, and only then, will you gain true knowledge of SEO.

The absolute best way to become an SEO Expert is to first learn as much as you can about SEO, and secondly, test things out on your own sites until you have proven data telling you what works and what doesn't.

In the past, we have had 400+ domains out there running thousands of different tests. Doing things like that will help you know what works and what doesn't.

This is part two of my article on becoming a SEO expert. You can read part one of this SEO Education series first if you want.By spending time in online marketing forums, you may find you absorb a lot more search engine optimization (SEO) information than you realize. When I joined my first tech forum, I was baffled by the techie language. Within a few months, I could hardly believe I'd ever notunderstood what they were talking about.

I started to do "seo" in 1994 from a 386 and a dialup modem In the pre-internet era, some sketchy businesses were starting their company name with a bunch of A's so they could get on the top of their competitors in the local newspaper.

Seo was using similar brainless techniques to rank: like copying the dictionnary at the bottom of their pages, repeating the same word a zillion time, then the techniques started to evolve, little by little.

The first time I tried Google, I thought I was in paradise. Finding relevant results on Lycos, Infoseek or AltaVista was taking over half an hour sometimes, and now, on the top 5 results, Google had 90% of the time an answer to my question.

Some people think they are Mastering SEO because they know how to use a few spamware like Senuke, Scrapebox or Xrumer. They found the weakest link of the chain and they over exploit over and over. Until Google finds a way to strenghten that link, until the Spammer win and everyone starts having a hard time finding relevant information or until someone come and beats Google with a brand new way of bringing more relevant information with a new "out-of-the-box" thinking.

If you keep your goal of becoming an SEO Expert for a few years, you might start to believe that you are truely an expert and will enjoy being able to push an organic listing on the top of the page. Someday you will end up on the #1 spot for highly competitive keywords in competitive markets, and will receive a lot of visitors. If at that time you haven't found yet what is the true purpose of SEO, you will start to knock your head on the walls and ask yourself how come you worked so hard for so many years to finaly get here, on the top of the world and realize that it brings you such a small return ?

I hope at that time you will understand that ranking is far from achieving. It's fun to know about how to rank, but if you haven't learn by then how to deal with people and convert visitors to customers, your success will be very little. There are a lot of people in this forum who know a lot about generating traffic, and all they do with that traffic is either selling their click through for a few cents or trying to sell poor content, tutorial, "digital" goods that will make them happy if the convert 1/1000th or 1/100 of their customers to actual cash.

When you learn how to target your clientele, analyse your web trafic and strategically build it around a commercial offer that will generate true revenues, and learn how to optimize for conversion, then you will be an expert in SEO ! Good luck

I highly recommend you start reading MULTIPLE blogs about SEO on a daily basis for a couple months. Since SEO is a world in which nothing is guaranteed and nothing is really ever 100% proven you really have to read multiple blogs and do that consistently so you'll get multiple angles/opinions about everything that's going on in the world of search. Good blogs to check out: SEOMoz, SEO Theory, SEO Book, Search Engine Land. These four should give you some very different perspectives on things.

While you're reading, start experimenting with some of the stuff you learn. You'd better be prepared waiting for a long *ss time before seeing some results though: it can take months if not years for a new site to rank well consistently. Sure, a site can rank quickly thanks to all kinds of link spam, social spam, and other gray hat and black hat garbage... but those rankings will never last. Making rankings last is about being (very) patient and trying different things.

Perhaps even more important: talk to anyone who seems to know a thing or two about SEO... and then question absolutely everything they do.

    Summary:

    - Read multiple blogs daily for a period of several months
    - Experiment with techniques
    - Socialize with SEO professionals
    - Question SEO professionals, ask them for absolute proof, discuss, etc.

Most people learn at SEOCHAT and SeoMOZ forums but they are for idealists. Here you get the real life experiences of SEO practitioners as they share their successes and failures. There are some shady characters lurking in the corners but you can avoid them well enough.
