Penalty for Lots of Social Bookmarking?

Hey folks,

As far as I have read everywhere as far as I could, Google in general favors Social Bookmarking Backlinks, almost compared to any other backlinking method. That also makes sense because people are online on Social Media and Social Bookmarking websites so if a search engine follows people and the reality, it should favor the backlinks come from where people actually are (let's compare it with backlinks coming from directory sites or article websites with few readers for example). That being said, one Social Bookmarking backlink almost does nothing good for SERP and a few of them together make your page index fast but have limited effect on SERP. When it comes to SERP, having lots of social bookmarking works. I am wondering have you ever been penalized or have seen any case of penalization for too many Social Bookmarkings? To give you an idea by too many I mean 200 to several thousands of Social Bookmarkings at each time of Bookmarking and for each URL.

Just pick out the top 20 to 25 social bookmarking sites and post your site url. We need to post some interesting article in those social bookmarking sites to get more number of votes.

Your site can be negatively effected by too many links fro any source not just Social Media.

To say the Social Media links are the best is a strange statement. It just doesn't work like that. There are many metrics involved and placing value on a link and you have to look beyond just the type of link. The MOZ tools are a good place to start if you want to start understanding link value.

Make sure all the social bookmarking site is being index and dofollow .
If not, you have no point to create link from so much social bookmarking and in return will harm you . I get someone told me that if a site get too much link back from no follow link or site not being index, it will take as low quality.

Google Penguin update is to penalize for over optimization. We have to be focused on generating quality backlinks via blog postings and article submission, and also have to update the content and try to get back links from relevant sites.

Hmmmmm.... The reason for my question is, I assume there shouldn't be such a thing as penalty for lot's of social bookmarkings because simply your link may go viral and a lot of people share it on different social websites, but I had websites that were penalized a few months back. They had different kind of backlinks so I can't say it was because of Social Bookmarking but I was just wondering. (BTW, it was in the middle of ALN, etc fiasco so it could be that too). Anyways:
1- What I do with Social Bookmarking when I have a lot is to have different anchors and different descriptions, all of them high quality content
2- Social Bookmarking links don't have much of value even if they are do-follow. I have tried them repeatedly for different websites from different sources and I know that for sure. Though they are really good for getting your page indexed.
3- A lot of do-follow Social Bookmarking is not a good idea. Link diversity almost always is better. Do-follow no-follow diversity is one of the factors, Simply because in real white-hat world that is something with more chance of happening.
4- I don't ping Social Bookmarking backlinks. They should be found naturally. Making sure they are being indexed is just wrong. It means all of them are being found in a short period of time. More risk.

It sounds like you are following a good strategy by providing diversity and not pinging the bookmarks.

I've had good success with social bookmarking. Of course, if you make your backlinks diverse it makes it hard to know what strategies are helping you or harming you.
