Need advice about my 20 interlinked sites, cleaning up my link profiles

I need some advice...
I am trying up to clean up my sites, link profiles etc.
I have a group of 20 sites about nutrition. Every one is on a different nutrition relevant topic: supplements, diet, meal plan, articles, etc.
I admit at the beginning I thought of doing 20 sites instead of 1 big site for SEO; but now they grown with lots of posts, articles and each one of them is a nice resource.
All 20 sites are interlinked in a sidebar. I have interlinked them now for user experience, to navigate between topics.
1. The question is: should I stop interlking them entirely, or make smaller groups?
2. From your experience is 20 interlinked sites allot?
