My Penguin experience & 60-day strategy, criticism welcome

I was hit slightly by Penguin. I had 3 #1 ranking words that got me about 1,000 UV/day. I stayed on the front page for all of them after Penguin, but my highest ranking kw moved to #4 and as low as #10.

About 2 weeks later, my rankings recovered and all are now #1 again. The only actions I took in that time frame were changing from an EMD to a brand domain (it's an authority site). I wrote 2 articles and posted them with direct links to my biggest traffic kw I lost ranking with. I'm not sure if any of the actions I took had any factor because they didn't jump back up in 1 day or anything, I was gaining like 1 position/day or so.

I am fairly certain that I have the most engaging title and best user engagement on that front page, so I do wonder if this helped me at all as well.

As far as my next 60 days, I have 2 basic phases:

Phase 1 (Day 1-30):
- Write 20 unique articles. I use a SILO format on my page for organizing content. Make a Youtube video for each article (slightly different from each other but similar) and embed them. Also I was thinking about putting the exact same duplicate content on a Blogger site, linking back to the money and spamming the blogger to see what happens, but I don't know if that's wise to try or not. Try and get those articles posted on high ranking relevant sites.
- Create a free pdf how-to based off the content from my page with affiliate links embedded.
- Set up my site so I can give away that free pdf and use it to start building my mail list. I always see people praising the list, I want to see what the big deal is. I have only been doing this 9 months so I finally feel I'm at a (stable) traffic volume that makes sense to really learn how to do it.
Phase 2 (Day 31-60):
- Submit those articles I just wrote to social bookmarking (not all at once). I have had massive success with Reddit with the tests I have done.
- Start creating weekly unique content with lots of images that I post to relevant forums, FB, Twitter, Pinterest, Tumblr, maybe anything else I think of that seems like it might be worth the time to make it look presentable.

In summary, the second phase is really to try to start building a community, and that's where I plan on focusing in the future.

If you see any obvious holes or suggestions for this plan, I would LOVE to hear them!

Where did you post the two articles to bring your site back from Penguin?

Okay, I am fairly certain you were NOT hit by Penguin. The most likely case is that incoming links to you were devalued.

Recovering from Penguin isn't instant - even if you make changes to fix the problem. It's a filter that is run separate from the main algo and as such "recovery" will only happen when they re-run the filter (which they haven't yet).

Yes, there is a lot of misconception out there by Webmasters now blaming everything on Penguin. Sorry OP, like retsek mentioned, you were not slapped. The actions you took have nothing to do with you regaining your rankings as far as Penguin is concerned.

Yeah I had some UAW spun content pointing to my main site, and I figured that was what likely caused me to drop. I'm still not sure why I lost rankings and gained them back so quickly unless I had buried links that were finally crawled because like I said, I didn't take all that much action before it bounced back. The only other thing I could think is the superior engagement pulled me up, but I don't know how much of a factor that is.

In any case, the 2 articles I posted were about 2,000 words each and both were only posted on my site.
