Links to SEO company's site then 301 redirect to client's site

I do work with offline businesses. I was going through some backlinks of my client's competitors and saw that their SEO company got links to their own site (SEO company's site) which was then 301 redirected to the client's site, passing on the link juice.

I'm wondering if this is common practice and do people do this. I can see why they would do that - if the original client wants to stop, they can easily work with another client (just redirect the juice to another client) if they want to and it'll be easier to rank the other site and their original client's ranking will fall.

Does the above work and thoughts on this?

the company will be slapped by google sooner or later. It is not a good practice in my opinion.

Never heard about this type of practice before but Google will come up something to punish those kind of practices pretty soon.

It's not a good practice. Google always count black hat and Google surly slap him site soon.
Many company try to finish seo project in minimal time that way they have used this kind of method.

First this is unethical since they cheat their clients (really unprofessional) they could go out of business before google do something because angry customers love to talk

This is a way to get their monthly SEO payments flowing. When they stop the subscription, their ranks will drop. But better to stay away from such methods and companies.

If Google will see that one website is using frequent redirects to different websites, it will penalize the domain. It is not an ethical practice and soon Google will notice that the redirects are made deliberately.

Sorry, let me clarify something. What they do is get the links to a page of their website, not the domain. Example, if they are working for a plastic surgeon, they would direct links to www.seocompany.com/plastic-surgeon-sydney for example. And then that is redirected to the plastic surgeon's company's website.

    Would that be penalized?
