I think VALID commenting can be useful. You can't just plop down a whimsey comment and expect to get any interest.. as far as the link juice goes.. I wouldn't do a TON of it.

Well... are you commenting, or spamming?

The former works. The latter still works, but nowhere near as well as it used to.

Commenting in forums and blogs works wonders still. You'll need to research out the correct places to do them and make sure that they're (mostly) relevant to your niche, though.

For example, if your niche is all about pink zebras and you post comments in forums all about purple giraffes, Google's not going to give a rip about them as far as your ranking goes.

On the other hand, if you post in forums about baby zebras, yellow zebras, and polka-dotted zebras, those could be seen as relevant to your pink zebra site, so they'll count better.

Agreed. The mistake so many people make is that they think just posting "love your blog" or "great information" will help them.

Not only will it not help the person commenting but if the blog owner is wise to everything going on with the Google changes, they will most likely delete those type of short comments because they might be counted against them.

Google values long and extremely relevant comments. Not attaboys.

      Actually, no.

None of us knows what criteria Google uses for relevancy. We're all just guessing, because they don't share that information. And if you guess wrong, you're missing out on a potentially large audience.

Let's say you had a blog about making more money through microjobs. From a marketing standpoint, who might be interested in that?

People looking for a little extra cash: stay at home moms with extra time, people who are into thrift by necessity but are trying to make a virtue of it, college students, aspirational shoppers, etc.

Those are four distinctly separate audiences. I'd market to all of them because it would be insane not to.

We do know there are certain neighborhoods Google doesn't like: porn, gambling, Ponzi schemes, etc. Don't stray into those and you should be fine.

        Well ...

Matt Cutts has shared quite a bit, fLufF, on some of those of those videos he's made where he effectively "answers readers' questions". I can't immediately offer any links, but in those and a couple of interviews, I've certainly seen him explaining in general terms what Google's "relevance criteria" are. He talks of the value of backlinks from sites (not "pages") thought to be on the same or closely related subjects to your own site's, as assessed by mutual vocabulary/keywords. I don't claim to be an expert on this subject, but I've certainly found applying what I've gleaned from some of those little videos to be of value (and of course this is related, in SEO terms, to the underlying basis of the benefits of content syndication, and partly explains why backlinks from syndication to relevant niche sites has incomparably greater SEO value than, for example, multiple article directory backlinks can ever bring). Respectfully, though I don't pretend the precise details are at all clear, I really don't think it's quite the mystery or guessing-game you suggest: I think there's information there from which we can easily learn and benefit.

Blog commenting is still an excellent method both for backlinks and traffic.

The right approach is to include as much value as possible in your comments. Every
comment should be like a short article. If you are using commenting software to spam
with generic comments like "Great post, thanks" and such, that won't get you anywhere.

Also, no need to comment on hundreds of blogs, but only a few of the quality ones.
By 80-20 rule, just focus on the 20% (or even less) that are of greatest quality and
    bring the best results.

Commenting is very useful tool to bring traffic and back links but it is always better to comment manually rather than using any kind of software for it to avoid spamming.

Yes, I am doing it manually. Is there any limit in counts of comments per day?

Yes, very much so, as long as you add value to the pages on which you comment, so that you can attract the targeted traffic you seek.

Forgive me sounding such a skepchick, but I always wonder, when people say that, whether they've been trying it with a quantitative or SEO-based approach, because that almost certainly won't work.

If what you're offering is of interest (and is relevant) to the visitors to the blog on which you are commenting, you chances of success will increase.

Yes, commenting still works. But the key (like everyone said) is, are you providing value. It not only helps you build links but also helps you get traffic. If your comments are not valuable, then people are going to ignore it. You also lose your credibility within that forum/blog.
You are missing out so much traffic, so why would you spam or use the automated software. When done right, it still works.

If you able comment on your niche related blogs, there must have value. But if you only do comment on dofollow blogs, Google will take it as spamming so try to be natural always do comment on dofollow and nofollow blogs.

Forget about the SEO aspect and think about how you can contribute.

Also, just recently I was approached by a pretty big site that asked me to JV with them - and it all came about simply through a blog comment.

Commenting is not useful is a very generalized statements. Commenting on twitter to sir richard bransons's tweet got these young kids a $1 million investment.

Like in anything we do there has to a strategy and follow up, commenting if you actually add value is more for forming relationships with much more established people in your niche than backlinking :-), and there in lies the key, as long as you are consistent and adding value it will be like nothing is happening for a long time, but the law of unoverse will kick in and you might end up getting a awesome oppurtunity to partner , work with or being interviewd by the person whom you have been looking up to.

As you all say, commenting do wonders but I feel the use of anchor text plays vital role. And some times I use my name since many of the bloggers simply refuse, if they notice anchor text spam.

I believe that commenting still working. If your comments are not spam comments then they will be approved and people who read them will not feel like they wasted their time.

I agree that anchor text has its' role, we have to write something that refers to the site of the link. As for the blogger, is common to use your name, so in my opnion, it's not a big problem

It definitely does count. When I stop posting, the visits fall off, when I start again, they pick up again. It's that simple. So yes, - it does still work.

But I can only repeat what so many others have already said. Give your posts value. Offer useful advice or tips related to the thread. This may sound obvious, but so many people on so many forums don't do it.

For me, it's not about links so much. I like to think that I can help someone in some small way. I don't have much to offer, but what I have is yours - free ! - lol

        All the best,

    • Blog commenting is an excellent way to attract traffic and get backlinks. This strategy works only if you provide value through your comments. You also have to leave comments on well established blogs that are relevant to the content of your site.

Blog Commenting and forum posting is the best and the easiest way to get backlinks and also tons of direct traffic to your website. which can be monetize for amazon or adsense. but you have to be very careful about the quality and the type of the places where to comment. related forums and blogs are the best place to comment.
    thanks
