Fix crawl errors

6 months before i made a bookmarking site with cms pligg. The bookmarking site was built in another directory of my main site. After few months it was creating some problems so i deleted the directory and remove the cms too. Few days before i opened my google webmaster tools account and i was shocked to know that google is not crawling my site and showing more than 5000 404 crawl errors . What should i do to fix these crawl errors??? please help me.

  • redirection may help. Google on how to set this up via .htaccess.
  • problem is solved. errors are decresing day by day. i have made a robots.txt file adn disallow the 404 error links

    • I was going to suggest you to disallow that directory from robots.txt. But congrats that your problem is solved.
  • You need to setup a custom 404 page first then you need to put following code in .htaccess file.
    link to your main page, with a suggestion that the visitor can find what he/she wants there.
