With resent updates, sites with heavy footer linking got hit.. what i cant understand is what number is optimal or at least allowed ..with out having any risk.
i have been watching around for sites with lots of footer links like 10-20-30 and they did not drop any rank as was as i know..

Anyone care to comment ?

Its better to keep them fewer in my opinion. I have seen some PR8 sites that listed all their other domains in the footer on their websites and they are ranking well again and i think there is not any special limitation for it but as i said, its better to keep them fewer.

I agree too. Compared with other SEO factors such as site reputation and inbound links, Footer links is only a small factor of on page optimization that matters ranking.

The reason why some websites with many footer links still rank well, I think, is that they have advantages on other major SEO factors.

I totally agree with socialbookmark and as per my opinion too much footer link may cause your site. As per new penguin update, too much link from one page may cause your site or blog. Like in any free blog, its not necessary to put too much link in blogroll or in footer.

You have to avoid to much footer linking that can be considered in over optimization.

For the same domain (Internal Linking) we can add links ( but not link more than 2 links on same page). If we add Outbound link in the footer they will treat negative. if there is no anyway so use nofollow with outbound links.

its not a good practice to add lots of footer links after the over optimization update from Google.
use only 5,6 max links in the footer in horizontal menu
