Lol, nobody searches for Google (search engine), they just go straight to Google.

Does it matter If you rank on page #97 If most of your traffic is direct traffic (I don't think so)?

I think you're missing the point. First, if somebody is googling search engine then they were already at google. Secondly, it isn't about Google losing out on traffic because they don't rank well for "search engine". To me it's the algo that is important here. Google SHOULD be number 1 for search engine, why aren't they?

Maybe their tired of hearing all the other search engines crying about monopoly this & monopoly that?

I would imagine in 2012 very few people search for the keyword search engine, compared to the amount of traffic that search for the keyword google in their browser search bar.

Regardless of whatever browser I've used in the last 12 years, I've always setup my browsers default search engine as Google.

Then you have Chrome which defaults to Google Search, which is what I've used since it first came out. Really the only reason I like Chrome is because it's a simple browser that isn't cluttered with 300 pixels of toolbar at the top of the browser window, lol. Also, Chrome is fast.

Last time I checked my largest sites analytics, Chrome was something like 30% of the traffic, I imagine most of that Chrome traffic is running the default search (Google).

I don't think it's a big deal that Google doesn't rank for the keyword search engine. If your the star of the show, who cares who the opening acts are (Bing, Yahoo, etc...)?

I don't think it's going to hurt them I just find it interesting that they aren't even page 1 for that term.

These stupid search threads are just getting more sillier.

One just like this was done many times.

      Stupid is as stupid does.

You are on google. A search engine. And you search for
search engine. Since you are USING google, what do
you propose google to think you mean when searching
      for search engine? Google?

If you are on google, and wanting to find google, man
      you are too far gone.

You people should be working hard, and dang hard, on
your sites. But, no, you sit around all day long doing
the most stupid searches, getting the most stupid
results, then call google stupid. Yeah. They are
laughing all the way to the bank.

I think some brains here have been hit with a penguin.

Then they shouldn't rank at all if this meant anything. Google's goal is to show the most relevant results and this is an example of them not doing that. That's all.

Lol, but If your already on the Google why would you search for Google/search engine?

That's like being here on Warrior Forum & searching for the keyword Warrior Forum.

Sorry, the Warriorforum does not fit here because its not a search engine so no one is expected to search WF in the WF site.

Meanwhile, this guys have a point, Google is a search engine and ordinarily in SEO terms, if you type "search engine" or any other keyword one is expected to see listing of search engines including Google or whatever is typed.

It probably can be an intentional act by Google.

I guess since search results are getting worse and worse with Google, people do need to look for other search engines.

Talking of search engines, given dogpile.com is no. 1 does that mean, it is the best search engine out there? And have the likes of altavista, lycos, and company anywhere near catching up with bing, the search engine which provides the best results at the moment?

I checked it before two months and Google itself was on the 3rd page for "Search Engine" keyword. Whenever you're stuck with some query, nobody will say "BING IT" or "YAHOO IT". Everyone's going to say "GOOGLE IT" and it sounds cool too

LOL, I don't think Google was "hit" by Penguin. It seems that the most relevant result for "search engine" should be google and whether or not people search on google for "search engine" is irrelevant. You can find Google with other search queries just fine.

I do have a theory about this. Google was so successful in taking over this niche that nobody refers to it as a "search engine" but simply as Google.

      That's exactly right!

Not only did Google get into the niche early, the never stopped growing other products like Youtube. I'm sure when most non-IMers think of online video, they think of the word Youtube.
