buying crap links for competitors site to rank it lower?

Ok, so this went through my head earlier, what's stopping people from buying some ****ty fiverr xrumer 20,000 back link package on a competitors website.

Would this demote the site? I'm asking this because I am in a industry which is competitive and i wouldn't want that happen to me!

My links are well built (apart from a fiverr gig when i first started the site) but so far I have good profile links.

I saw a thread earlier where somebody claimed a competitor had blasted their site with xrumer and scrapebox links and their rankings had dropped and so had their earnings form $60 a day to a couple $ I think so it seems it is possible.

    Here's the thread - http://www.warriorforum.com/adsense-...imization.html

We've read quite a bit about this post-Penguin. I'd previously stated that I thought it didn't make much sense that Google would allow Negative SEO, but since they've changed their wording regarding whether or not competitors can harm you...I'm not so sure. There are plenty of examples and case studies being done right now showing that it's definitely possible.

This topic has been discussed a LOT round here, fraid you're a bit late with the idea!

The general consensus is that it IS possible to damage someone's site with negative SEO, and that it actually may be a new development that came about around the time of Penguin. There are people on the forum specifically complaining of negative SEO being done against them and damaging their rankings.

You would think Google wouldn't want to allow this, but look at it the other way: strong, authoritative, naturally-backlinked sites (esp. big brands) are going to be pretty impervious to negative SEO. So, let the small-time marketers slug it out with each other, great way to weed them out... It has a horrible sort of logic - survival of the fittest?

I don't recommend doing this. These links can help your competitors, you cannot be sure what will happen. Google can see these links differently each time (as spammy links | normal backlinks)

Yes it is very worrying that someone could spend 5 years on a website earning thousands, you could blast 50k xrumer and 50k scrapebox links direct to it and screw their website up.

I hope the next update fixes this, but even if it does will it be able to undo all the damage it has caused.. probably not

I would THINK that if your PR is high enough then spammy BL won't affect it.

I remember reading somewhere that 1 PR5 BL has more authority than 100 spammy PR 1 BL.

If a PR is high enough to get 5+ then you wounldn't need to worry (IMO
