I would use Atlanta in your adwords - ppl don't search on surrounding towns. Trust me - I've been through doing local SEO for some clients...

Thanks for the replies. I have tried county, city, ga, etc., but it appears that there really aren't many searches for any of these. I don't want to mislead customers that are searching for spa atlanta. I feel fairly sure that I can get this business listed on page one of Google. Maybe there just aren't that many people searching for these services. The city where the business is located is fairly large, so I am surprised that Google is not showing any searches for this type of service in this city.

If anyone else has any other ideas, I would love to hear them. Thanks all!

Your places page is where it's at for your biz. Build citations for that and make it as powerful as possible. You can even get it popping up in other locals by you that is not your actual city. Just use google keyword tool and see what people are searching for you and then target that. 20 miles is a hall IMO but may not be I your area?

Atlanta is a massive city. Many don't realize how large Atlanta is. It also has some the worst traffic in the nation. So, 20 miles here is not good at all and no one in their right mind is going to drive 20 miles here for a massage. I think my first plan of attack is to get them into Google Places and get their site ranked for the city that they are actually in, with the understanding that it might not translate into a huge increase in traffic. This is a new business that is about to open, so they are not getting any traffic right now. Thanks to everyone for the input!

It depends on their target market. I promote businesses in Round Rock, Tx to Austin residents all the time. Be thorough with your keyword research though because that will make the difference between ranking for a quality keyword with traffic and a less than quality keyword that won't bring your client any additional business.

Another strategy you can use is to find as many local competitors as you can. Many of them are probably still using archaic SEO methods and will literally give away their keywords in the meta keywords on their website. A lot of times you will uncover keywords that way which someone else found that you didn't even think of. You can also pull the anchor text of all their backlinks.

Do not only look for top ranking sites. Sometimes other businesses have found good keywords but just haven't put in enough effort or do not know what they are doing to rank for those keywords.

although your business is only on limited of your city you have to target atleast sate wise and majority of people now search globally and change your meta keyword and use local keywords in it.

I have some experience promoting spa sites and I can tell you that some of your clients will be ready to travel up to 1hr (sometime ever more) for a spa treatment.
Some people will even "make a day of it" and enjoy the trip and anyway it`s not like it`s a cup of coffee to take "on-the-go".

So I would definitely use Atlanta in you keywords and I would get me some backlinks even for "weaker" KWs.
Even if Google dose not show any searches it dose not mean that there aren`t any. You don`t always need to target thousands of people. As a rule, long tail KW are much more important and even if you got 5 visitors a month per one KW then 100 KWs with yield you 500 and etc.
Also it`s important to keep your backlink profile "natural" and not just pump the the anchor text over and over again.

I live north of Marietta and I probably wouldn't drive too far for a massage, but I might for some kind of special spa package. I suggest you write good blog posts about some of the packages and then some about the individual services and benefits of say a facial etc. because people will search for individual services.

Sign up for Onlywire and post them to social bookmarketing sites. Get a fiverr gig for this. Social media would be good for your client so get that going and also Pinterest. Pinterest is a huge social media site for women ages 21 - 40.

Make some quick slideshow videos with keywords in title. Someone just had a good WSO for this. If you can alter the timing of the video slightly and add extra text slides at the end etc., then you can use the same video, but change the keywords in the title targeted for each area and have multiple videos ranking.

In one competitive market a client has city targeted landing pages. That was the only way I could get him ranked for the 20+ cities he services. That was the strategy most of his competitors were using too and it works.
