Hi, my question is do forum profile backlinks still work post penguin? Or are they even dangerous? Reason being back around xmas time I ordered 1000 of the things. My rankings went up a lot untill penguin got me.
My site has been hit by penguin so I'm trying to clean up all the things I can with it.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Forum profile links are generally not good at linking directly to your site. However you can use forum profile links to build backlinks to your backlinks which will help index your links and give them a boost.

I have found that some high page rank profile links can still be useful to link directly to your site like high page rank web 2.0 profiles or niche related high pr profile links. But blasting a bunch of spammy profile links directly at your site will not work and may even hurt your site.

Never use profile links. Full stop. They were an ancient and outdated method before even the blog network links got hit.

Do you know "old is Gold" :-)

Well no doubt profile links are not much beneficial but still it works. what we need to do is just be calm and do it properly..

1 simple rule when we boost by using any linking strategy it will hurt our site.

so do regular work and mix-up different linking strategies..

even nowadays Google or article/web2.0 etc. sites converting them to No-Follow

Yes, they still work quite well if you do them properly.

The aim is to post useful and interesting content on the forums and aim to attract real interest and direct traffic through your forum links, this will generate good direct traffic as well as help your rankings in Google which in turn will attract organic traffic.

Different than just creating a ton of profiles, though. (Which is pretty useless IMO.)

Forum profile links are still working for getting your site high page rank. But do-follow forum profile links are giving quality back links to your site. It is one the link building technique that give back link for your site.

I still use forum backlinking - but the trick is not to use a lot - I'm talking about maybe five or six a day. Also - stay consistent, when you stop - your site will drop.

If you are using forum profile signature link pointing to your website from your website's niche market forum and you are timely doing posts to such niche forum it still works i believe, as far as i have experienced.

At first check and re-check that any of them have got any PR or not. Because, I seen that some of my profile backlinks got even PR-6 (.edu)!
So, getting even PR-1 means it has been treated as 'Authority' backlink.

Then, if you haven't done it already, surround the anchor text by related 150+ words text which will make it more Relevance. If possible, add photos and make the profile more natural. I think, it'll pass the same juce as any Blog commenting backlink does.

      Though, it's totally your decision.

You'd be better off spending your time submitting a press release or guest blogging.

Buying a thousand forum links = bad strategy.
Consistently commenting on forums yourself = useful strategy.

It brings people directly from the forum to your site if you say something interesting...which you would not be doing if a "bot" is doing it...and it also provides a slight boost in rankings.

Too much mis-information here. Do people really not learn or take notice?

What Johhny said. And in terms of press releases (and I mean real press releases...not articles sent out to automated "online press release" websites, those aren't much better than blog networks) and guest blogging, you'll be getting a highly relevant backlink on top of the main benefit and reason...targeted relevant traffic to your niche/product/service. I'd take 100 visitors from a relevant guest blog/article over 500 SERP visitors any day.

Old is certainly NOT Gold when it comes to SEO. Old is the past. Old is what used to work, what people took for granted, what has turned useless or negative in past alogorithm updates, and what bit them in the ass. New is now, new is adapting, and new is learning from your mistakes.

If "old is gold", how is keyword stuffing 500 keywords at the bottom of your site going? How is mass spamming your site with EDU and blog network links going?

You say its not that beneficial (the profile links), and we also know these are exactly the type of techniques and links that will end up biting you and your SERP reliant site in the ass, so why even bother with them?

Sure mix up your linking strategies, just be smart about it.

This. When I first started out, I saw forum comments (NOT signature or profile links) as just another backlink on a relevant site for me. I quickly realised that forum threads can be absolute gold mines for traffic, even a steady little trickle after the thread has aged or no longer active.

Why? Not only is it relevant traffic, but because people search for answers and if they happen to click on that thread, your post is in there with a link to your site. You're also directly engaging and providing useful information in a relevant thread and traffic funnel...well as long as you genuinely do contribute rather than "I agree, check out this site www.site.com".

    • It work mate but you should not target it to your main site. If you did that please remove it.. use Spy glass to locate those forums. Forums should target to the web 2.0 not to your main site. I suggest that you will do social network.

Using forum profile links as a primary source of backlinking is definitely not enough anymore, in fact it´s counterproductive.

Google became a lot better at detecting spam, and profile backlinks are one of them.

If I use profile backlink, I only us them for my second or third tier to strengthen my backlinks, but definitely not as a primary source of backlinking.

As your primary source of backlinking you should be using web 2.0, social bookmarks, wikis, guest blogging and eventually private high PR networks.

Google is hot for eliminating all high PR networks, and they are not as stable as a couple months ago. The good thing about high PR posts though is that you can rank pretty competitive keywords a lot faster than with softer methods. However, once your links get deindexed your website faces huge problems.

In order to strengthen all of your fresh built links optimally, you can use linklicious.me and mass-ping.com .

You should treat your backlinks as good as your treat your money site. Backlink your backlinks, and do it consistently so your backlinks become stronger (leverage). However, don´t submit more than 50 links a day to either system.

If you backlink consistently with different methods and strengthen your backlinks, your rankings will become more and more stable.

    Backlink, backlink, and backlink.

    Charlotte,

Forum links do work as long as they're followed. However, make sure they're part of a wider mix of links. Forum links on there own will have little value.

I guess what you're asking is whether or not using forum profile links as the ONLY way to build links to your site is beneficial or not. If that's the case then I'd say that it's not enough. You need more DIVERSITY in link building.

That means you need links from all kinds of sources like article directories, press releases, blog networks, blogs comments, social bookmarking, social networks, file sharing sites, wiki, and of course, forums (in profile and posts) as well. That way Google will hardly catch up with your pattern and your site will be far more resistant to algo changes.

Are forum profile links detrimental when you build them directly to your main sites? I think it's not 100% certain. But I suggest you test things yourself instead of taking advices from other people (as they have their own opinions). If I was you, I would build links from high PR forums with actual traffic (again, another opinion!)

    Hope it helps!

    Stop with the theory crafting.

Forum profile still work just as good as ever.

Google "Buy Viagra" and take the first 10 results and put them in ahrefs.com. What kind of spammy backlinks are they getting? Xrumer!

Forum profiles are very weak compared to, for example, guest post links and other more "white hat" links. There is too little content on them, very little authority in a profile page even if it's on a high trust/authority domain, and they are very, very difficult to index and keep indexed. For the effort it takes to index them, it's not worth it in 2012. I am sure there are many conflicting views on this but these are the results of extensive experiments.

I am sure the viagra spammers are ranking using Xrumer, but it is extremely naive to think that they are using simple forum profile links and ranking #1 for terms such as "buy viagra". Most of them deal in intricate linking structures not understood by anyone except an elite group of russians, and they also like to hack high authority .edu sites and "piggyback" off of them. Go and make a site to target "buy viagra", blast it with 100k profiles and see how far you get. LOL.

Since I stopped being stubborn and believed in the anchor text penalty I have gone along ways. Threw away old domains started with new.

3 things work to get top ranking and they will last through the updates.

High PR on page backlinks. Not High PR hostname backlinks.
    Anchor text diversity Most important.
    On page SEO done correctly.

Profile links work really good still. Blasting thousands a day. Its major link anchor text diversity. Same anchor is traceable.
