    • Use Google AdWords or other keyword tool and check the search volume and competition for different variations of your targeted keyword. If you need ideas, check out eBay, Amazon and various online magazines to find products that sell. Do some brainstorming and make a list of long tail keywords in your niche.

  • My advice:
    1. Competition is irrelevant.
    2. If you're just starting out, ignore the paid tools and outsourcing and do it yourself.
    3. Follow Ms. Virtual Assistant's advice and really drill down your niche using the GKWT. "Weight Loss" isn't a niche; it's an industry. "Do **** berries make my butt look fat" would be a niche.
    4. Spend 2-3 hours reading through this forum and the AdSense/SEO sub-forum and then just go out and buy a site and do it. You can get started for $20 today.

  • You can find lower competitive keywords in the weight loss nich, but you might want to change the keywords regularly to stay up with the trends.

Market Samurai can help you find loing tail keywords.

You may be able to make more money in the weight loss niche by using CPA offers. Your affiliate manager for the CPA network can help you choose the offers that are selling at the moment.

  • Use google keyword tools. It is good enough. U need to find long tail keywords. Long tail keywords is very effective and you can target your niche effectively. Your niche is weight loss. For example, how to lose 5kg in 3 days. Make sure your keyword monthly searches is 500-50,000. Beyond than that, it will be very competitive.

  • Hey Paul,

I've learned a few things from super affiliate Mark Ling on this subject.

First off - just to make sure you're approaching things the right way - he preaches against diversification.

"Of the super affiliates I've met, the vast majority (pretty much all of them, including myself), make their profits almost entirely from one or
    two niches." - Mark Ling

That's how you win. If you want to go into a big niche like weight loss or any niche for that matter you are going to want to spend hours a day working on just weight loss, or just marriage advice or just dog training.

Find a profitable audience and they hit them up over and over
again with different products, sites, and selling points.

I wouldn't worry too much about competition if you're willing to be committed and consistent. Like REALLY consistent. Hardly anybody is consistent so if you pick a niche and really focus on it for a long time then you're ahead of 50% of people already.

(by the way - this statement about competition is almost like law of nature. Just look around. 90% of people are average and 10% are exceptional. 90% don't do much, 10% do.)

Also stick to the big niches - the evergreen ones that have always been
solid money makers. Sure, experiment a little bit, but only enough to check out other niches, not so much that you dilute your income from your big one or two niches.

Which niches are considered the "big niches"?

Weight loss, making money, satellite TV on PC, muscle
gain, self help, anti-spyware, forex, and money online.

People are always looking for new products in these
niches, so you cannot cannibalize your sales, nor can you
    run out of warm leads.

Of those niches, weight loss and fitness are the biggest across the board, with making money coming in at a close second.

As for keyword research here's what you want to do. After you commit to a niche you want to think pyramid.

Meaning you want to use programs like Market Samurai or Traffic Travis to find long tailed keywords first. First rank for a bunch of long tailed keywords with just a few searches a month and then move up to shorter and more broader termed keywords. Tackle the small fish before moving onto the shark keywords.

    Hope this helped buddy

Thanks for all the contributions. yes, i can change that weight loss niche to something else. my plan is to set up an affiliate site and drive traffic on it quickly and flip it. i can rank on google in short time. i can use google tool, but want to know the result of the keyword search that can rank well.
  • Hi Paul,

You need to start from thorough keyword research. Tools such as MNF are very useful for this. Not only it's great for finding and analysing keywords, it also gives you current hot topics, google trends stats and more.

Most importantly you need to smartly choose the seed keyword(s) and drill down from those.
  • What kind of site do you want to build? Product-based sites like Amazon affiliate sites or CJ affiliate sites are very easy to rank. Informational sites can be a little more difficult.
  • First of all, I personally would not target ONE keyword. I would try to create an authority-esque site that targets different keywords in different posts.

To find a niche, check out the Amazon bestsellers.

    • I do just the opposite and make a killing. I find the best-sellers to be too competitive in most cases. Targeting lower-competition products allows you to build a site that requires very little to no backlinking to rank and earn.
  • Go on CB and CJ marketplace and select niche, then analyze targeted keywords by using Google keyword tool or some paid programs like Micro Niche Finder or Market Samurai and start work on it.
  • Weight loss is a huge niche. You would have to be very creative with your targeting of those keywords. Long tailed keywords are obviously easier to rank for. Competition is irrelevant because it's all about backlinks and quality of content-if your work ethic is there you can always outrank your competitors.
  • That's a tough niche! You can use long tailed keywords i guess. Just be creative to the niche you handle. Post Great Contents and drive more traffic to outrank your competitors!
Embrace social media! it's a great combination!

    Best of luck!

i can stop thanking for your contributions for far. not just to confuse you with what i want.

i need to build a micro niche site which monetize with CB products and amazon or with adsense. and still flip it in no time after working on the google ranking and revenue.

so far, i have used ebay pulse and come up with another keyword. searched on google keyword tool...result i got.

    i searched using Exact match

    xyz keyword

    local search monthly = 1000
    global search monthly= 4500

I was like, this is it...But trying to google that same long tail keyword
and it gets millions results on google search engine. doest it mean that keyword still has millions competitors?
    • [1] reply
    • The number of results in Google's index has NOTHING to do with the competition.

"purple and bruised elephant balls" has almost 6.4 million results. Do you think people are really trying to rank for "purple and bruised elephant balls"?

Anyone that tells you that is a factor for determining the level of competition is regurgitating some crappy information from 10 years ago.

I also would stay away from Market Samurai. Waste of money. Tells you little to nothing about your level of competition. I would instead use the Google Keyword tool to find some keywords and then use something like SEO SpyGlass or even Majestic SEO to analyze the backlinks of the top sites. That will tell you a lot more about the level of competition than MS could ever hope to.

  • Just to be accurate, weight loss isn't a niche. It's a category. It's a HUGE fricking category for anyone to cover.
  • Use keyword finder and research tool like Ultimate Niche Finder and Traffic Travis will help you to save a lot of time to find EMD with Low Competition.
  • Does anyone on this forum know how to do SEO without an EMD???
  • You can use help of good keyword tools such as Market Samurai + Google Keyword tools to know the best keywords to target on your website.
    • [1] reply
    • Market Samurai is an overrated, overpriced POS. Do not use that.
  • Just use the Google keyword tool to find out the traffic on the keyword. It also shows you the competition on that searched keyword. Weight Loss is now a very high competition keyword. Its difficult to rank for it. Try searching some other keyword.

  • I used to use Market Samurai but now I find myself using it in conjunction with Long Tail Pro. Used together those products are excellent.
