Does the old link building techniques still helps in getting rankings on Google? Or we need to change the whole link building strategy. If anyone knows, share your thoughts here with us.

It is better now to build links with sites in your own niche. Be careful, or avoid, link farms. Don't do "keyword stuffing."

With Penguin you have to avoid strategies clearly identified as Spam and over optimisation.

      Do's
      • get good link / IP diversity
      • make sure your anchor text is very varied (no more than 15% / money keyword)
      • make sure most of your backlinks are to your brand or root domain
      • limit the amount of links you build
      • aim for a balance of high quality links and low quality links

      Dont's
      • stay away from private blog networks
      • avoid automated software unless you really know what you're doing
      • don't over optimise money keywords
      • be very careful of link building services - most are now dangerous
      • don't over optimise your on page SEO

Many private blog networks were deindexed by google recently and sites with links on the network tended to receive Unnatural Links Penalties which effectively means your website is finished.

It is possible to find truly Private Blog Networks that are better run and safer but these networks are hard to find and are not advertised publicly.

Lots of link building methods that worked before still works. Google went after sites that were using spam link building methods like link exchange, link sell-buy, link farms, private blog networks, gimpy blog commenting, spam forum posts, etc. if you are doing legitimate link building, you should not have any issue. while lot of sites went down in ranking for practicing questionable methods, sites that were using methods according to Google webmaster guidelines gained ranking.

if you want to please Google, then pay attention to what they want and would like to see. never take a short cut by building quick and easy links. spend time building links and over time you will get rewarded for it.

    It's pretty simple, really.

Most of the same type of backlinks still work. However, they've shifted to QUALITY over quantity. In other words, avoid sending thousands of poorly spun articles, automated blog comments, etc, directly @ your site. Instead, create fewer links from these types of sources. A single PR1 backlink is a lot more valuable than a few hundred PR N/A backlinks from spammed pages anyway.

Since the panda, it's always been "NO TO SPAM". But the penguin made the move the penalize such websites that do spamming. One important thing to prevent your sites from penalties is to use lots and lots and lots of variations of your anchor texts and keywords.

The old techniques still work, but you need to go level up with mimicking natural linking patterns. especially when it comes to anchor text diversity.

I think you're going to need to mix in a little bit of grey if you want to get anywhere. (Essentially any form of link building is considered grey hat.)

Google wants us to "create great content" and watch the traffic roll in without doing anything else. I wish it was that easy.

Penguin friendly links means to create diversity in link building using different and RELEVANT resources (dirs, forums, and so on) and the anchor text as well. Do this on slow but regular way and often skip some days to make it look like more natural.

Go for natural link building. Don't go for link schemes or link packages. Try to give something valuable to the internet and don't spam with duplicate content.

Manual is always safer. You can do a 'reality check' before placing your links in places where a software program would be happy to put them.

Plus if you do things by hand, you can do less links. That way you won't over reach your goals and enter into the penalty zone.

The tradeoff, of course, is that manual is a lot more work and takes longer. That's why people won't quit experimenting with automation.

So slow and steady is the best way to go and is any advice on some good directories and if we submit to directories that need reciprocal is that going to affect our rankings because of the back link we are providing is against google criteria...

        any view on this?

Everything that used to work 2 years ago still works now.

All that has changed is a demand for higher quality content (that just means unique it doesnt have to make any sense) and to diversify your anchor text.

Other than that - nothings changed. Blog networks are more effective now than previously because people are too scared to use them and everything liek blog comments, guestbooks, directorys are all good as well.

Don't see what all the fuss is about personally

    - Dont overly target onpage seo.
    - De-optimize anchor text. Lots of "brand.com" and "http://url.com" anchor text. 50%+ of links.
    - Link revelency is now more important, get niche relevent links.

    Should work well.
