Varying backlinks is probably most important, but I would use the same practice for internal links as well.

Just make sure to mix them up.

    Hey zonkow,

Anchor text, by definition, is the visible text in a hyperlink. This Is Anchor Text.

A large part of the recent Penguin update was about penalizing websites/webmasters that over-optimized their anchor texts. For instance, a website about "blue widgets" that used the keyword "blue widgets" in all of their anchor texts was likely penalized by the Penguin update.

Going forward, you are going to want to vary what you use as anchor text when you are doing link building. This means you will want to use exact match keywords, partial match keywords, generic keywords (click here, website, visit this site, etc..), and unanchored keywords.

Furthermore, varying your keywords may not be enough to avoid any future Penguin penalties. You will need have a large number of various anchor texts. A site that has under 100 different anchor texts, even if they're varied, is a big red flag to Google that you may be doing something shady. Granted, the number of anchor texts you use will be directly tied to how many links you have. It's just a good rule-of-thumb to increase the number of anchor variations that you have going forward.
