Alright guys, I have made a website for my client and eventually added my niche's keyword in the footer, just so that people could know that this site was created by XYZ. Now my question is should I remove backlinks or not? Cause I heard it from a friend that they should be removed. Is it worthy from SEO point of view ?

I dumped footer links years ago because they seem to cause ranking issues. It's really up to you though.

That is fine but can also one thing by adding nofollow tag for that link. It would be fine.

A Footer link is great way to get references for your online business especially if people visiting the site dig your design. Visitors can simply click on the footer link which will take them to your sales page or business website.

What about if you've got a link in the footer to a site which you don't own?

My site has a link in the footer to the site of the person who designed the theme. Could Google possibly deem this as a paid link or not?

If it's a free theme you should leave the link as a courtesy, however if you paid for it I don't get this greedy trend with designers insisting on leaving their link in the footer. If I pay for a theme I'll always remove the footer link.

You know that is a really good question. I would also like to know if G00gle sees these types of link as paid links.

Yes they can. These can get you in hot water like with sponsoring WP themes.

So is it the actual location of the link that is the problem? If the same link was in the sidebar instead of the footer, wouldn't that be deemed as a paid link?

But it is only a single link on the footer and I don't think G00gle will make a big fuzz about it unless the linking website on the footer is blacklisted by the search engine. I would have to say that footer links are insignificant and will not solely cause any type of detrimental effect on a website's ranking because after all there is only one link coming from it. What do you think?

What if the domain authority and page authority of that site is insanely high, then it will surely be plus point for your niche. what do you say ?

Interesting this should be brought up. Yesterday I no followed all my footer links as there is the same link elsewhere on the page. After doing this my website moved up 6 places in the space of a matter of hours. No need to remove them, footer links are helpful for people however no follow is defiantly worth it!

I was wondering if google would see this as spammy after the update. Even if keywords are links?

Yeah I also have some sites that has footer link in it and it has not affected its ranking. In fact the link is pointing to an authority site which is a good thing because it shows G00gle that the website is not trying to game its algorithm since there are links that are pointing to another website.

Yes you can place your link but don't hyperlink your keyword over there, you should use your brand name. You can also make link no-follow.

I totally agree. using your domain name instead of your keyword on the footer link will definitely look more natural.
