How long is too long for an EMD?

I've found a long-tail keyword phrase in a great Adsense market, with an EMD.org available (I'm still an EMD believer). However, the phrase is 5 words / 30 characters long. Only 880 local searches per month, but CPC of $25 (I know this isn't an accurate measure, but it's still a good guide). Competition research suggest very easy for top 5, pretty easy for #1.

Is this just too long for a domain? Am I best served getting a shorter, but still relevant domain, and targeting this phrase with a page on that site?

  • If you only want to target that 1 keyword, I think it's still good EMD even if it's too long. Some only target 2-4 words EMD and promoting long-tail keywords as their sub keywords. But if you only want to focus on that 1 particular keyword, go for it

    • Personally if the keyword is more than 3 words long then I wouldn't go for it. This is just my opinion of course.

      If you can get an EMD that's <= 3 words then this is ok as it can be considered a brand name without looking spammy.

  • Do you really need a whole domain just to rank this phrase? Why not add a page to an existing website?
  • I agree with mosthost.

    On a side note, registering EMD's for every keyword you're targeting is going to get VERY expensive. And I think EMD's have lost a lot of power.

    I'd much rather register a fairly general, but still niche related domain and target keywords via the inner pages.

    • Yes! This is true as never before. Google does not value EMDs as before.
  • In general I would say it would be better to get a more general site and let this keyword be one of your pages. You could target so many more keywords from one site then.

    However, if this keyword has some "generality" to it, then it might work ok and you could still build out other pages targeting other keywords. Hard to know though without knowing the keyword
