Over the past year, I've heard tons of people rant and rave about Squidoo and how you can EASILY make money with squidoo through affiliate programs- particularly amazon's affiliate program and adsense.

Well I took some time, cracked my knuckles and put the stories to the test.
My conclusion might surprise you.

Conclusion- "Squidoo is a joke..."

Here's why

I wrote 5 - approx 1000 word posts for 5 great keywords ( all "excellent according to the "keyword matrix", yes old-school I know)

These posts and keywords were written around high volume selling products that I actually own and use. I wrote all the content myself and the only content I took was 1 amazon review per post that was approx 1-200 words. Amazon was properly cited in bold and everything was by the book. I added my affiliate links to links throughout the posts, crossed my fingers and hoped for the best.

"No big deal right?"

What I noticed was:

A. Within 24 hours of publishing the post, the lens had been locked, flagged for plagarism, etc.

B. Upon first publish, It won't let you publish due to "Red Flag Words" in my case the word "Reviews" was used 10/1000 words

C. The hoops you have to jump through to post a legit article are ridiculous.

NOTE: One of the lenses - I argued with squidoo over 2 of them and within 3 days, they lifted the lock, the one that couldnt be published, I havent heard anything back and the other seems to be ok... atleast for now.

"How do some of you actually use and make profit from this?"

Also after reading their policy 10 times, i discovered that their terms have a huge problem for all of us...

"Lenses cannot be affiliate related or be obviously promoting a product"

"What?! Ok, then what would I use squidoo for?"

Also,

I've noticed a few sites that have great keywords in the title on squidoo and they have gone nowhere with google.

My overall conclusion...

I think Squidoo might have been the way to go a few years ago but now I'm not so sure. They've definitely gotten strict on their rules and maybe they're cracking down on people posting product reviews hoping to make a buck. If you're planning on getting ranked high and fast for your keyword... You might be barking up the wrong tree. I like the ease of how fast you can throw up an article but I'm not too fond of how they take a large percentage of your adsense income.

I wish it was easier than this but this is what I've found out. I hope some of you can maybe prove me wrong.

I think Squidoo is a really cool idea, I just think that maybe it's time has passed.

"Any thoughts?"

Your pal

J

      How is it dead?

Squidoo can be frustrating, but i've only encountered once where it said that a lens contained content which appears elsewhere even though the lens content was original. It seems that their content checker needs refining.

I've never had any problems with Squidoo, but I only publish for backlinks. I've also noticed that when you select the option to pass on profits your Lenses rating is MUCH HIGHER. I tested on several lenses that I did last year and never monetized - just left to "charity". About three weeks ago, I edited three of my top lenses and changed to pay me and within three weeks I have lost a minimum of 20,000 spots on all three.

Coincidence? Me think not. Again, use Squidoo for backlinks and build your own domains to monetize.

LOL! You have never heard me or anyone else here pump
up squidoo and affiliates. Squidoo has its own "affiliates."
I tout squidoo for making money off their adsense and
amazon. And I do quite nicely. Not to mention
    having a backlink factory.

Most affiliate pages are jokes. So squidoo, of course, would
be no exception. Jokes are for comedians.

Squidoo is a powerhouse if used correctly.

    Note: If used correctly.

If you choose to use for crap affiliate garbage, then
man you are barking up the wrong tree.

Care to share a little more about that? Between myself and my friends that do Internet Marketing, we probably control close to 50 lenses and none of us have ever made one penny on Squidoo. Granted, we set up the lenses for backlinking and not really to make money, but you'd think we'd get a random sale at some point?

How many lenses do you have and what are the approx ranking of the money makers?

I've got to agree with Paul on this one. If you have 50 sites and can't make a penny, it's not squidoo that's the problem...it's you.

I used squidoo for backlinks. Those lenses don't make much (20+ of those, make 1-2 collectively a month).

I then made 4 lenses with 700-800 words each more directed to Amazon products. Guess what? $60 in the first month. Still goes strong.

In fact, one lens I made recently got PR 5 on the last update after only being published 13 days. So when Paul says "link factory"...ya he means it. (if anyone wants a PR 5 backlink to gardening niche...lol )

Once I realized that making decent lenses was just as easy as making crap ones for backlinks...well I started making decent lenses for money and backlinks

If you want to create s**t lenses like you create s**t websites, great! Go for it. Easier for me to rank my lenses then. If you just want a backlink, knock yourself out its pretty easy.

If you want $$$...then get serious and make quality stuff. True story right here: I have 47 lenses between a few accounts (which is tiny compared to lots of lensmasters), and I have NEVER NEVER NEVER been locked for anything. In fact at the risk of being offensive I find it hilarious you blame squidoo.

My Squidoo lenses have never made any money either...

HOWEVER, my Squidoo lenses usually become PR2 when Google updates PR, so they make for good backlinks to my money sites!

Most people don't know how to use Squidoo properly. I'm refining a course to publish as a WSO here within the next week that shows a lens I have that has averaged over $700/mo. That's just one lens. If you're only using AdPool and Amazon modules to collect on earnings, you're seriously missing out on Squidoo's potential.

I get about $300 each month of squidoo for the last 6-7 months and I dont even touch my lens any more, complete passive income for half a year. 300 dollars is not a lot but when I'm doing no work for it, I'm not complaining. I only have about 41 lens as well.

I think you have the knowledge and potential to go beyond Squidoo. I always thought of Squidoo as a newbie-friendly way of making money out of commissions. It has its fees and rules, but if you can’t do better you have to go with it.
You are clearly more knowledgeable and can do better than simply writing articles for squidoo and hoping to get paid. But you can still use it as a great source of backlinks, ( or even kw research for your other projects?)
