Exact Domains and Niche Sites...If you can't get .com is it still worth it??

Hi guys,

Looking to get my first attempt in IM underway sometime soon but I've come up with a million questions for this thread....

1) I'm looking at possibly renting out local business domains using . .org or .CA instead of .Com since I live in ontario. For example, lawyers in trenton.com or something. ...

Also, is trying to rank for that exact phrase worth it if the top 4 search results right now are the Yellow Pages??

2) What about the proper names of IM gurus like KellyFelix.org or .net, worth it??

Thanks

Nope the yellow pages are not tough competition at all. Shouldn't take you long to outrank them. You don't need anything special to outrank them.

If you can't get .com then .net and .org are good options.

If you are in Canada and looking to rank for local business .CA may even be better than .COM.

The consensus of the people I listen to is that EMD is dead.

Well After the Panda updadte I read in many big forums and blogs emd's are not supporting by google and they wont give much value for it...

For eg: if you have a weight loss product and trying to buy weightloss.com doesnt gave a #1 nor a page 1. But one thing, the content and SEO that you are doing, its the key for ranking it...

I have to agree with David, EMD is not as strong as it was before. Again as Dating world says, .NET and .ORG are good options if you get stuck.

Just make sure you get all your onsite SEO correct before starting off site SEO and getting to the top spot for local services should be no problem.

If the top 4 are yellow pages results you should be #1 in no time.

I wouldnt try and get EMD on a "gurus" name, they may try and sue on copyright grounds.

I second that it should be fairly easy to outrank the yellow pages!

A follow up question about exact match domains... If the phrase "lawyers in toronto" is only locally searched 30 times a month, is trying to rent out this domain even worth the trouble? On one hand I would say yes because 1 lead could means thousands of dollars for a lawyer, but I wanted to hear your thoughts

Yellow Pages seems quite easy to outrank. The best advice I can give you is to stop reading this thread, buy the .net/.org and get going. Return to this thread after you've got the site setup with the rest of your questions.

Also, do not purchase the EMD of a guru, it's bad for the community, in a lot of cases it is illegal due to the way in which the EMD will probably be used and finally, do you really want the Guru in question to catch on and make it his/her primary objective to destroy your small, new website?

Though, congratulations on getting started =)

Yes, both .org or .net domains are ok.

Don't fall for the EMD hype. They're not nearly as strong as they once were. (Although Bing / Yahoo may be a different story.)

Why not register a niche related, but fairly general domain and target keywords with your pages?

    domain.com/keywords1
    domain.com/keywords2

    etc...

I would have to disagree on the domain, exact match domains definitely rank faster than non exact, and it is much easier to keep the top spot afterwards using one.

I will say that good content will still smash an exact match .com though, more so now than ever, perhaps that's what you all mean? The unfortunate truth is no one knows exactly what makes good content, well, not from Googles point of view anyway. It is different for each keyword and niche from my understanding and experience.

But the exact match doesn't have to try so hard as it were.
