hey guys,
Since the penguin update rolled out, lots of seo'ers have been talking about the impact of over optimization, especially about the use of anchor text. Is keyword targeted anchor text really that bad? i was just going to do some social bookmarking and i thought if i cant use the targeted keyword as title every time, then what shall i use as title that could help in ranking? and do i also have to avoid using same tags or descriptions in different sites while bookmarking?

Google Penguin Update aims to eliminate webspam so website with keyword stuffing is one of those to be devalued by Google. Content quality is the most important key factor to overcome Google Penguin Update,

Use many different anchor texts......also, not always link to your website using keywords you want to rank for.....you can use "click here", "visit this website" and many other generic terms to make it look more natural........

I wouldn't really worry about specific percentages. Just mix it up from time to time with related keywords, general keywords, anchor text, names, etc.

You can still use the main keywords as an anchor text but often mix it with other link text as like 'click here', 'visit my site', 'read more..' etc.

    Yes,

If you use one keyword (anchor text) and get backlinks from the same anchor text again then Google Penguin can catch you easily and consider as spam action.

It is good to change anchor text in each backlinking. Avoid making many links in a day. It is really harmful.

Give priority to daily small amount of quality links.

You can still use your keywords as your title in doing social bookmarking. Just mix it up. For example, if you are using the anchor text "computer" you can make it like "best computers", "computers for sale", just like that. Or you can come up with a long tail keywords/phrases that include your main keyword.

Also, don't be afraid to use your website's URL as your anchor text. This is one way of diversifying your keywords.

If you HAVE to build backlinks, just make sure to use a large variety of keywords to each page in the form of anchor text. Make it look natural.

It's funny that a lot of people commenting on this have nicely optimised anchor text in their signatures!

Seems to be about getting a natural looking balance.

These people are suggesting this and that but their signature links are still using money keyword anchor text.. lol! the best thing to do for your anchor text right now is use the url of your website and the brand name of your domain or domain name. Instead, of using your money keywords as your anchor text.

yep.. penguin = mix up your main anchor + long tail + url of your site..

so if your only using 1-2 keywords expand these to 7-10 and also add in your url as the anchor

It would be so bad if you keep using the same variations of anchor texts over and over again. I think the best way to do it is to use as many variations without thinking of optimizing a keyword.

With the latest penguin update the usage of exact match anchor text in link building is greatly reduced. You need to vary the anchor text by using click here type keywords, using the anchor text like example.com or www.example.com, using the title of your site. There has not been any specified percentage for this, you can vary them as frequently as possible. You can read more about it in following link:

I read in a few posts here in warrior forum that its better to limit the anchor text to 15% of the total backlink profile. if thats the case then i'm glad that penguin hasn't slapped me yet lol. i've taken care of it now though(i guess).

The fact that you've gone above 15% and not been slapped yet (Penguin was introduced three months ago) shows that there are no hard and fast rules when it comes to percentages. As others have said, don't worry too much about targeting specific figures - concentrate on mixing up your anchor text and making it look natural.

Yeah maybe there aren't any hard and fast rules when it comes to percentages but lately i've been thinking its always better to vary the keywords. so i used something like "click here", "mysitename.com" and all as keywords. i think its gonna be okay now. and thanx for your suggestion.

Since Penguin, in particular, it has become important to include anchor text like 'click here' and 'yourdomain.com'. After all, if we were to rely solely on others liking our content enough to link back, that's often the type of anchor text they would used.

In addition to alternatives like 'click here', 'yourdomain.com' and LSI keywords, I've found that it's also worthwhile mixing up the main keyword itself. For example, if you are targeting 'Facebook likes', you could also use long-tail variations such as 'A guide to obtaining Facebook likes'.

Some people are saying its a myth that anchor text needs to be varied. There seems to be some truth to it because there are sites on page 1 post penguin which are using about 80-90% of their targetted keyword as anchor text.

Maybe whether anchor text optimization is a problem is a combination of on site and off site factors. Has anyone noticed a link between on page optimization for a keyword and the percentage of anchor text?

If you mix in a few LSI variations and a lot of plain url links like yoursite.com, http://youtsite.com etc. then you should get no problem. I like to use lower quality links for anchor text variation and on the better ones I mainly use my targeted keyword.

use "Read more" " Click here" "Visit here". Do not boost your keyword links alone, if your site has relevant inner pages link that too.. We want to make user(readers) friendly, not search engine..

Still use your main keyword, but also use a variety of other related keywords and generic terms like click here, click here for more info, etc. Use your URL as well and don't just link back to your main page. Deep link to the other pages of your site too.
