Sudden drop in Google Rankings!

Hi everyone!

One of my sites dropped highly in rankings, almost by 70%-80%. I had many keywords on the first-second pages and now its totally out of search. I've checked the indexing and all pages are still in the index.

All happened last week. Strangely on Wednesday I had a huge plunge, then Thursday everything went up and now I'm seeing it went back down for the last 3-4 days.

Does anyone know whats going on or experience something similar?

Thanks a lot!

Google dance? Penguin update? How did you get your keyword to rank? Spammy type SEO stuff? This is happening all over it seems.

What's your backlinking profile? Use automated services?

If it still not coming back after few more days, it means there's something wrong within your site that need to be fixed. Go to Google Webmaster Guidelines to know the things that work well for Google.

Yes, I got hit by Penguin 1.1. I have a good mixture of everything, and a percentage of spammy links as well. However, wouldn't say that I have lots of them.

What's interesting is that I have pretty much same links on several of my sites and its the only one that got hit, at least not all of them! Btw I dont use any automation.

It happen from time to time, one of my site gained a huge PR increase, after a week or two it dropped to its normal/previous PR.

Although I did not do any seo on that site. To be honest my site didnt even had any content, Expect for a "Coming Soon Page"

    No worries bro.

About 80% of my testing sites (around 20 posts each) got hit by Penguin but after further testing to find out the causes some of them were slowly climbing back

There are still some linkbuilding tests running so I thought I shouldn't jump into conclusion as to what is the "primary cause" for most sites

Here's what I've done for all those sites that are moving up again
(some are slowly moving up but some are moving pretty fast):

    1) diversifying the anchor text (I guess you've heard that 100 times, but that's true) - If you're using any linkbuilding software you may do something like this

    {lose weight fast|yoururl.com|click here|lose weight fast|how to lose weight|weight loss for women|learn more|visit here|lose weight fast|this site}

If you're doing it manually, just use Getspintax to help speed up a bit

Basically I've made them to have about 30-50% chances for the targeted anchor text while the remaining ones are for diversification. Just keep this in mind and do the same if you're building links manually (I used to have like 70 to 90% of the same anchor text)

Now for each post/page I would have at least 3 or more anchor text targeted. Not only would it help to take fuller advantage of each post you have, but it will give more diversification for the anchor text (just spend a little time to do further kw research for each post, it'll certainly pay off)

Frankly this has the most obvious positive impact for the sites that are regaining ranks, but if you'd like to go further, I think the following few tips might also help:

    2) Deep linking to other pages

    3) Get some high pr contextual links (preferably homepage links) from Fiverr using generic anchor (better use gigs that don't offer report)

    And finally be patient.

There are some more testing going so I think it's better to share only when there is obvious positive rank movement due to those changes.

Just don't panic! And test different things out and I'm sure some of your sites are gonna come back strong again! Playing with Google is really not that hard with a positive mind!

If you want, you can also make some sites for the purpose of testing, this will certainly help you see things much clearer. (It's all about testing testing, failing failing, and earning earning more more)

My last word is, if you're really serious about building a solid income through ranking sites, do consider building your own blog network (a few high pr blog with low OBL could already be strong), it's definitely worth it in the long-term.

What's better than working at home? :p

    Have a good day!

I noticed that before and usaully I just increase my backlinking and the problem went away, although that might not work for everyone. Remember other people are actively increasing thier backlinks, so it's sort of a race.

Each site is about 4 years old and both of them have 3-4 PR's. It looks like Google dance but its just kind of strange to see sites like this dancing after being so long on Google and on first pages.

Well that's sound strange I think you should definitely try to check your backlinks and see if there is any other OF page activity involved besides what you have done, it's possible that somebody else did huge backlink blast with spam links to your page in order to drop your site ranking ..if there is no other link activity involved besides the one you done then I don't know what exactly could be, then I would assume that your site got effected by latest Google penguin 1.1 if you look up Google webmaster forum you will notice that hundreds of webmasters lost they site ranking even with PR 4 and 5 that may be the reason but still make sure to check your links again to make sure ...

It looks like I've been hit by Penguin 1.1 on May 24-25. It's still like a roller coaster. Hopefully I'll recover in sometime.

Yeah, one of my client sites was hit by Google on May 25th and another today!! These are 2 local businesses that have been around for quite a long time. Had several page 1 rankings for a wide range of keywords. Everything I've been doing is white hat. I also have been diversifying the anchor text for the last couple months.

I've never had this issue before so it's really hard not to panic. These are my 2 biggest clients!!!

One of my site have the same problem, it's realy strange, main keywords on that page drop from page 2 to page 4, longtail keywords drop about 100 position. The other page from same site still rank well, does google penguin will effect to single page? Don't know what's happend.
