Is it possible Gmail emails affect rankings?

I have several sites that have ranked well for a long time. In March I started doing some link building using Fiverr. Normally I don't use the gmail account that was setup when I opened my Google account, but I was having trouble opening a Fiverr account with my regular email, so I used the gmail account to get access. What I did not realize is all of the emails from Fiverr were going to my gmail account. Including the ones with all of the link building details.

In April, after these links were built, I suffered a two-thirds loss in traffic only on the sites that I built links to that were included in the Gmail emails.

Is it possible that Google used the information in the Gmail emails to penalize my sites?

I think you're being far too paranoid. Besides, wouldn't it be borderline illegal for Google to (manually) review your emails?

Hopefully you're right, because I've always had a similar concern.

But don't they offer ads based on your email's text? I'm aware that the ad matching is not a manual review, but isn't that a similar thing?

Not really, since there's not anyone physically monitoring and reading your emails.

We're getting into the tinfoil hat stage here.

If someone is super-duper paranoid they can always use a different service.

No. BUT check this out... If you're logged into your Gmail account and you click your link (or any link) in the search engine rankings, your Gmail will memorize it.

It will APPEAR like you're higher in the charts, or the link you clicked will look higher in the charts.

However if you use Rank Tracker, it will prove that its just an illusion created by your gmail.

            Interesting, huh?

If Google used Gmail to penalize websites it definitely wouldn't be in the way your referring. I'm sure that your Fiverr gigs are not at the top of Google's watchlist. The closest thing I could see them using Gmail would be for monitoring domains associated with user-reported spam and punishing them but I have never heard of them doing that.
