so, why aren't curated sites penalized?

I was under the impression that Google penalizes for duplicate content; however, why do some curated sites rank high? I'm a newbie so I don't get this one quite yet (sorry if the answer is obvious ).

So if I cut&paste content from, say, 3 different sources, then slap my own sentence or two in there, and maybe even add an image plus a YouTube video, then Google wouldn't see that as a duplicate content and penalize me? Even though aside from my that one or two sentence that I added, everything else is copied from multiple sources? After all, it seems to me that this is how a curated content works.

What am I missing here?

You are missing the fact that you may be plagiarizing content if you are copying content word-for-word from other websites, unless you have their permission to republish their content on your site. I' ve seen a lot of this so-called "curation" that is nothing more than stolen content wrapped in a blanket of 2 or 3 sentences at the beginning and end.

If I find significant amounts of my site's content copied on your site without my express permission - even if you have linked back to me, I will send you a DMCA notice faster than you can say "boo." Republishing another site's unique content without permission is theft and copyright infringement. Don't do it!

If it is on your own site, then yes.

Curated content is similar to article syndication, apart from that you are publishing an excerpt plus a link to the original source.

Wikipedia has plenty of curated content and it certainly isn't penalised.
