Please help-SITE SPEED!

Hi everybody,

I made a post awhile back about my site being slow as ****. I got a 68 on Google's speed test. Well, i'm trying to fix this problem. My main problem is leverage browser caching.

After doing some reading, I downloaded W3 Total cache. I followed some instructions I found online and its still not getting rid of this problem. I dont know where I am going wrong and its really starting to annoy me.

For example, here's a few of the problems as seen on Google insight:

http://xxx.com/.../pinterest.png (expiration not specified)
http://xxx.com/.../rss.png (expiration not specified)
http://xxxx.com/.../twitter.png (expiration not specified)
( i took out my webpage url). Please someone help me! Where am I going wrong?

  • I thought this might be relevant too. Before they list the URl that needs caching, Google writes " The following cacheable resources have a short freshness lifetime. Specify an expiration at least one week in the future for the following resources:". How do I do this please? My site is seriously slow and I need to speed it up.
  • Since most of what shows on Google page speed for leveraging browser cache is for media files, I set the Expires header lifetime to 604800 seconds just like Google wanted. Yet its still not helping! Am I missing something? As you can see, im quite desperate for help

    • Is the caching plug in the only one you've tried?

      There are a couple of other plug ins that can help with site speed, too. One is Better Wordpress Minify, and the other is WP Smush It. You can download both of them from the Wordpress Plug In directory.

      Smush It has been very temperamental for the last few weeks, so you might get some errors, but it is a great way to compress images and reduce page load time when it is working correctly.

      Better Wordpress Minify minifies Javascript and CSS files for faster load times. I would definitely recommend backing up your site before trying this one, though, since there is a chance it could cause problems with your site.

      I can't guarantee that these will help your page load time, but they helped me.

  • After using W3 Total Cache a site's speed should increase a least a bit.

    Maybe you just need a better configuration of the plugin.

    Or if you have lots of images, install wp smush.it

    Follow these steps and your site's speed should increase in no time
  • Go to GTMetrix (dot com). They'll give you everything you need
  • Those will be generated by a social plugin which you'll generally have no control over.

    In the scheme of things, that's a very minor factor in your site load times.

    I would highly recommend using Home | CloudFlare | The web performance & security company

    That will make a big difference.
  • Hey, thanks everybody. According to GT matrix, I have a 81 for page speed and a yslow grade of 89-is this good? Google says my speed is 70%. Why the discrepancy? Going to try cloud fare to further speed things.

    • All of those testing services will return different results & will generally provide recommendations a little differently. Instead of driving yourself crazy trying to make each reporting testing tool happy, look for the common recommendations they make that are probably quick wins for your site.
