That's easy. In all my experience, the best SEO strategy has always been to produce great content that people really want to read or watch and submit it to high quality sites that already have high levels of targeted traffic.

Outside of that, there's really not much that works long term.

Don't ignore the advice above as being to simple. It is actually very sound advice.

Go to where the traffic in your niche is and figure out how to get infront of that traffic that could be guest posts, paying for ads or something else. Keep in simple.

    Long term strategy :
Create 5-10 Web 2.0 properties with unique content and images/videos , pointing to money site (T1)
Create 20-30 manually spun , readable , relevant content and point to above created T1 (T2)
Create Manual blog comments to T1
    Directory submission to T1
Get PR links from image comments, guestbook , wiki links etc to T2
Get social signals to money site and T1

    Props:
Google can't punish you for unique valuable web 2 properties
Link juice still pass to money site
    Long lasting

    Cons:
    More costly and time consuming

    Short term strategy :
Replace above plan with relevant , paragraph spun , readable , scraped content on T1
    Rest all remains same

    Props:
    Cost effective

    Cons:
Google may / maynot find and punish in future updates

A solid strategy is to build up a diversified backlink profile with varied anchors for your site

Here are some lists and footprints that may help you get started

    Web2.0 blogs

    Article Directories

    Bookmarking

    For niche-specific forum signature links
try to use footprints like these ones:
    Keyword(s) forum
    “Keyword(s) forum”
    "Keyword" message board
    "Keyword" bulletin board

For wiki links, try footprints like these ones:
    inurl:"special:userlogin"
    inurl:wiki site:.edu
    site:.edu wiki

For comment links, try footprints like these ones (leave real comments)
    - keyword "Leave a comment"
    - keyword "powered by wordpress"
    - keyword “Enable CommentLuv”
    - keyword "Leave a Reply"

For private blog network links, either build your own (too long to explain it here) or use other people's network (e.g. order from Fiverr). This is essential if you're after competitive keywords

There are more backlink sources like video sites and network sites etc which you could also use to help diversify things.

Then get all your links indexed by creating and submitting RSS feeds (free) or using backlinkindexer or linklicious etc. (paid)

Then power up your tier1 links with any type of links in a bit more aggressive scale.

If your site is new, build no more than 10-15 links/day and slowly increase the amount as it grows

The point here is to be able to stick to a linkbuilding plan and keep building links, keep testing and keep picking up all those that work.

After all, it's all about creating more sites, automating things up and patience.

In terms of article directories, say you are submitting to 30 (number plucked out of the air), how different does each submitted article need to be? I am really against spinning so would I have to manually write an article for each?

If they were tier 1 links I would obviously write a brand new article I am guessing but for tier 3, realistically how different do they need to be?

Actually spinning is ok and it certainly would help make things to go more efficiently. A lot of people are giving it a bad name just because our laziness has overshadowed the actual beauty of spinning. I mean if you proofread the articles you submit, there's really no point to be against "spinning"...

Create high quality Web 2.0s manually with unique content on the first tier, but don't interlink them, because it leaves a footprint! You could interlink the second tier if you'd like to, but then try to not follow any schemes, and keep it random. Actually, keeping the whole structure random and asymmetric is a great idea.

You Need to know & follow this -

Avoid low-quality and low-relevance links. Google particularly mentioned links that are contained in content with no relevance (i.e., spammy or highly spun content).

Don’t use just one “money keyword” as the anchor text of your incoming links. (It’s been found that sites that had >60% of link as just one keyword were penalised.)

Similarly, don’t use that money keyword with internal linking; e.g., change your menu from “where to buy blue widgets” to “where to buy”.

LOL at the " write great content" remarks, you guys do know that Google can't read. right?

And in most niches other website will not link to your website because you have a great article about a coffeemaker or a paydayloan, it is not going to happen so stop advicing those methods...

As you can see is my grammar not the best in the world and i still know how to rank my crappy writing style about all the " great content" sites, reason? Backlinks and it doesn have to be a whole lot of them but they have to come from different sources....

Make sure your linkportofolio have no-follow and comment links in them, yes they are worthless for ranking but not for hiding a patron of artificial linkbuilding.

Create in the first week of your site about 20 links per day from different sources and up it with 10 links per week (depending on your keyword and domain age) direct link from articles, blog comments, no follow links, wiki links etc.... untill you get the rankings you want.

Use web 2.0, but make sure that those web 2.0 proprieties look legit so that they don't get deleted and all your work go to waste, treat them as a normal website, you can use spung content but make sue that you take out all of the grammar errors you can find... not for the SE but for the people with the delete button.

Now blast those web2.0 properties with all the links you can get your hands on, these properties will be used ass buffer so your site is save... over time these links will get a higher value (PR) and will give your site or page even more stability.

DO NOT INTERLINK THE PROPERTIES EVER!!!!!

I use this method for years now and i always get ranked within 2/3 weeks depending on keyword, competition and domain age

    Hope it helps you

    Dave

Well for me, Google's Panda want's Quality content and Penguin hates Spammy backlinks. But loves natural quality links.

Now guess what? You just need to produce content that will make people link to...Your content is great and links are natural then..
