Backlinking, I don't even know where to start!!

Hi everyone,
I have 5 sites at the moment which i set up approx 6 months ago as a complete newbie. I've been learning as i go along thanks to you guys on this site which is greatly appreciated.
The sites have ok traffic considering any backlinks i would have are completely organic, i get maybe 100 uniques a day per site, most of which are from the search engines with a small number of referral traffic, this earns me a couple to a few dollars from adsense. I pretty much understand keyword selection, analysis, implementation and on page SEO and would be fairly decent at writing all of the content myself etc. but for some reason i don't get the whole backlinking thing. I mean, i understand what it means, what it does and that its very important for ranking etc i just dont know where to start, there's literally too much information on the subject for a novice to take in, not to mention the fact that with the penguin and panda updates some recently important information that you took in is now borderline irrelevant.
Would it be possible for anyone to break down the easiest ways and places for a newbie to get backlinks?
Thanks in advance folks.

There is nowhere to 'get links.' Any links you add yourself are considered suspect these days, according to Google. Why not continue to add content and build social connections?

      Thanks for the reply.
So are you saying literally to not build any links back to my site at all? Even say from a blogger blog or squidoo lens?

Check out what others are saying in threads today. You have to be careful with unnatural links. Blogger and Squidoo should be okay, but you might be better off building more posts on your main site.

Definitely stay away from 'link blasts' 'Fiverr gigs' and tools. Do it by hand and be careful

Cool thanks mosthost, i've never got into black hat SEO thankfully, probably due to my ignorance more than anything else , but based on what i've been hearing about the google updates recently i won't be going near them anytime soon, and will stay on the straight and narrow, thanks again folks.

Start with some high pr niche-relevant blog commenting and social bookmarking... do it slow and one step at a time so it doesn't look unnatural. Personally I'm a bit more aggressive with web 2.0 pyramids and other structures but if you're just starting out... take it slow!

I think yahoo answers is safe. Just answer questions related to your site and use it as a legitimate reference. I get lots of traffic (relatively speaking) from yahoo answers
