Backlinking, I don't even know where to start!!

Hi everyone,
I have 5 sites at the moment which i set up approx 6 months ago as a complete newbie. I've been learning as i go along thanks to you guys on this site which is greatly appreciated.
The sites have ok traffic considering any backlinks i would have are completely organic, i get maybe 100 uniques a day per site, most of which are from the search engines with a small number of referral traffic, this earns me a couple to a few dollars from adsense. I pretty much understand keyword selection, analysis, implementation and on page SEO and would be fairly decent at writing all of the content myself etc. but for some reason i don't get the whole backlinking thing. I mean, i understand what it means, what it does and that its very important for ranking etc i just dont know where to start, there's literally too much information on the subject for a novice to take in, not to mention the fact that with the penguin and panda updates some recently important information that you took in is now borderline irrelevant.
Would it be possible for anyone to break down the easiest ways and places for a newbie to get backlinks?
