So time to start over or try to recover sites?

OK it's been over a 1 month now and just about every microniche site (sites with 1 -15 pages each) are no where on the first 25 pages of Google for their primary keywords. Before these were ranking all on first page. Many of these sites used BMR for a few months where rankings really improved, but others that got hit did not use BMR. Clients sites and my own local SEO site that also used BMR did not losing rankings.

I tried to clean up one of the sites as far as onpage content with lowering kw density, using lsi keywords, doing internal linkings among the pages, etc. I then built some new web 2.0's (with varied anchor texts with very low main keyword usage) and then blasted those with web2.0 profiles and article directories. But it just seems my site dropped even further now in the SERPs.

So is it time to just maybe focus on the sites that were profitable and just go back get new domains and set them up again with new and similar content to try rank again? These were all EMDs that got hit. The clients's sites and my own SEO site were not EMDs.

Any advice guys? I've lost a good chunk of my Adsense income from this hit in the rankings.

Well Matt Cutts just did an interview and told some people to start over...

But yes, you can recover. You just need to decide if it is worth the effort and $$$ to update your backlink profile.

Most any time you make changes to your site, or more links point to your site, it goes into a google dance. You have got to give it time to settle. Especially when you have a negative to overcome. It is like the site has to prove itself again.

I would give it another month or even two. Continue with light backlinking to the direct site - more is not better, and maybe some social bookmarking.

You could instal something like Rank Tracker plugin and it will let you know as people start to find the keywords that lead them to your site. Usually it is the longtail first, as you probably know.

I have decided to take a few of my really small and apparently penalized micro niche sites that were in similar niches and recombine them into a new larger site that will have a longer term plan of being an authority site in the broader niche. It is less keyword focused and more of a brandable domain.

I have tried a few things to get the rankings back on these post Panda and Penguin, but so far not a lot of luck. I know from experience that it is a profitable niche as all of the smaller sites converted well so it is worth the effort to start over and then try to go the authority route.

Some other sites that are still ranking well have been receiving new content on a more regular basis and so far they have stayed relatively stable. I think the larger site model is the way to go for the future even if it starts off as a micro niche to test the market.

Good luck whichever way you decide to go.
