Why Are Forums So Powerful

I participate on a political forum and have made it my mission to post titles I think people will search for (and they do). Within an hour the post title is in the top ten on Google. The same thing happens here.

What does it take to get my web pages/posts to get in the top ten in Google an hour (or 15 minutes) after posting? Is this the power of site authority alone? How can I get that in my website(s)? 1,000 posts a day? Get 10 people to make 5 posts a day to my website so there's constant "freshness"?

There seems to be something in the power of forums that we're not utilizing. I think it's due to site authority.

  • Well if a forum is very active then the search engine spider will recognize this and keep coming back to find new content. Just like it does for Digg, its not a forum but you can get a page on Digg indexed within minutes. If you have a site that isnt very active then the spider will see this as well and not come back as often.

    • Exactly, activity is crucial, and it's one of the things that google uses to rank websites. If a website has a lot of activity, obviously many people are using it and are satisfied. Therefore, other people who are searching for a similar project should enjoy it as well.
  • Well what i will say specifically about this form is..

Yes it is done on authority alone. Some websites such as wikipedia will be ranked just as fast as Google trusts everything they put up and it is keyworded correctly and original content
  • Active forums are a spider feast - so they are continually crawling it and will index it nearly instantly. On one forum I used to admin, we would have 10k spider guests at times.

    • But eventually Google gets around to finding my pages (a week later), but RARELY do those pages end up in the top 10. In a forum, or Yahoo Answers, any trivial post makes into the top ten. Does constant activity on any website give that site "authority?

Im wondering if making MANY small "posts" (I use pages) every day to my site, give me that authority? What if I were to go with wordpress (or Blogger) and give 10 people the ability to post to my site (like a news site with many authors)? Or at least accept fresh/original daily content from multiple authors? Would multiple posters from many areas give my site that "authority"?
  • Spiders love forums. Also constantly updated blogs like Profootballtalk, TMZ, etc do well with instant rankings too!
  • Yes, the constant activity and fresh content equal search engine love!
  • Agreed that this is the power of authority. Sadly, I thin owning a domain like that is pretty much out of the reality for many of us.
  • Authority. The same can be said for a really popular blog.
  • I had wondered this as well as I'm on a forum in my industry that google loves do to it's traffic I guess? Now I know.

I get my older/large sites re-indexed & re-cached instantly, anytime I want, all day long (If I want). I'll usually hit page #1 with my target keyword.

I try & tell people around here, large/established sites have advantages, I know a few listen, but most people have a fear of creating larger sites, which doesn't make any sense considering those same people don't have a problem creating 100 sites with 10 pages each (which is a lot more work, setting up multiple domains, etc...).

    • I do the same... And one of my websites inner pages are ranking for very good terms. It is a health niche. Pages getting traffic and backlinks and ultimately bringing me authority and some real good changes in the homepage without working for the homepage.

My earlier client website was rocking the movie niche for more than a year. His every newly added movie went to the first page within no time. I used the same tactic then. Still doing it and no update is breaking it. I am loving it.

    • The main fear here would be facing a penalty. If you've got just one or two large sites a single slap can cut your earnings to $0.

I try to find a happy medium and aim for 20-30 page sites. Not quite as many of them, but enough to not go into a panic if I lose one.
