Keyword research guidance - anyone point me in the right direction, or to a thread here?

Probably been asked a million and one times on this forum, so if anyone has a link to a good thread here related to keyword research?

I am not 100% lazy (although the wife may disagree!), I did a search first and tried narrowing it down to ones with most posts but it doesn't seem to work.....

Anyway, any thoughts, links or useful posts to a good guide of the basics of keyword research would be gratefully appreciated!

Check out the Keyword Research FAQ in the SEO Discussion Forum - takes a bit of reading, but some great information here

The idea of keyword research is to find how you can get the most traffic for least effort.

One way you can estimate that, is the ratio of searches over sites. Get the first number from the Google Adwords tool, and the second number from the number of sites for the phrase in quotes. The higher the ration the better. For example, I found a keyword recently which has 880 searches per month, and only 5 sites have that phrase. So I put up a blog post on exactly that phrase, and I get some traffic easier than from other phrases with more competition for the searches.

It can get into more detail than that, analysing various factors about the competition sites for that phrase on the first page of Google results, but basically the idea is you want to find keywords with the most searches, for the least effective competition, so you get more traffic. Obviously, factors such as your SEO will effect this, as you will get a lot more of the searches if you are #1 on Google results, than if you are somewhere on page 100. Anyway, that is what it is basically about
