Looking For Help - At My Wits End

Hello,

Since the penguin update, my site dropped to something like page 23 on Google and since I've been doing a bit of light promotion, it has dropped even further in the search engine - today, my site is down to page 38.

I'm really worried as this is my main source of income and it seems that everything I try is making matters worse.

Can anyone help me out or recommend a strategy to help it climb the ranks especially on Google (.co.uk) ?

I'll PM you the domain if you wish in order for some much needed advice.

Thanks in advance - Jane

  • No you're in the right section. Is it the domain in your signature? you can PM me your keywords that you dropped for and I will take alook.
  • Hi, I have just PM'ed you I hope this helps.

  • Hi DM,

Just PM'd you back - in addition to what is in the PM, do you think the index page needs any work too or do you think it is more to do with the anchor text (incoming links) ?

And stick at writing a good few articles with 'alternative KW's' ?

    A massive thank you !!!

Oh, by the way, I know I asked how did you find out how many KW anchor texts were pointing into my site but also, how do you analyse the 20% figure you came up with ?

    Cheers

  • Hi bro, you may take a loot at this and I'm sure it'll help

    • Your site content is good. You're lucky Google didn't squish you completely. Just focus on getting some brand links that are going to stick for years!

Don't link any "keyword" anchors to your homepage other than your exact brand until you have the ratio I recommended. Link your internal pages with a variety of keywords.

PM'd you with tools. 20/30% figure was from analysing hundreds of white hat domains.

      Good tips

  • Hi Jane,

I would do as others have suggested, keep building links but also mix up the anchor text and get some natural looking links.

Also I would look at updating the theme as it doesnt highlight your creativity being a photographer... just my opinion and not aimed to offend.... :-)

Good luck and keep the thread updated on your progress

    • Thanks Danny - it's actually another domain I've been troubled about but I take on board what you've said about my photography site ... if you think that is bad, you should have seen my previous offering

Seriously though, I'm taking on board all the info I've been supplied with and I'm actually putting things into practice now.

Also in contact with another warrior who has been of immense help.

So, one of these days, I'll have to get that photo site sorted too - arghhh !

      Jane
  • Haha :-)

There are lots of great wordpress themes out there perfect for photography :-) Check out studiopress themes :-) They are awesome.

As long as you take action you will do ok :-)

    Good Luck

    • Hi DM & Danny,

DM ... looks like a bit more thinking on my part now - getting out of my old way of working.

I've a few blogs which are EMD - that was a new one I learned a few days back ... EMD that is and what it stood for

So does that mean EMD's are a no-no now or is it still okay buying them ?

Danny ... the photo site isn't actually a blog but a static html site ... main thing at the mo is to get my main income site back to where people can find it again.

I may even turn my photo site into a blog and put up 301 redirects - that may be easier to manage in the long run - any thoughts ?

      Thanks
      Jane

    • Agree with Danny about studio press, great themes and great for SEO.
Love your signature by the way Danny

  • well some say EMD's are bad.... But I disagree, I have a lot of EMD's and they are all ranking well. But then its down to content and good links in the end.

You need to show google you care about your sites in essence if you have a lot of domains then you most likely dont have the time to work on them and then the content and user experience drops and that is what google hates...

EMD's are seen as the tool of the affiliate marketer and have a reputation for being thin crappy affiliate sites.

As with your site I would build it using WP and redirect the old URLs.... WP has lots of great SEO features and make things easy to update etc

    • Must admit Danny, since starting out using WP for my newer sites (blogs), I actually prefer working in it ... and I love designing my own themes using Artisteer - just my preference but if you like coming up with your own designs, I'd really recommend it and it is easy to use.

  • For an old site, how many backlinks per day or per week do you think I should aim for ?

And for a brand new blog type site, how many backlinks per day / per week would you recommend so that it all looks very natural to Google and ... how long would you leave in between getting more backlinks and how much would you increase your backling strategy by ?

    Regards

  • Can you mention the tools you used to take a closer look at his website. All of this was good tips and a lot of help. Looking natural is just a bit harder with all of the updates.

  • For an old site I would say around 20 links with pagerank and perhaps 150 other links is OK per month. For a new site the same as long as it's consistant, so even if you don't build links every day but maybe every 3/4 days as long as you stick to this plan, all is good.

I tend to go for some pretty hardcore keywords, my strategy has changed alot, I'm no longer sending links directly to my domain, I'm using buffer sites as I need to aquire a large amount high quality links to rank for these keywords, by using more domains I disperse the link power and velocity and I can build alot more than with just one website, in fact around 60/100 times more links. Plus it's safer I can remove the links if I need to by breaking the chain.

I'm definately focused more on quality now, I guess that is one good thing that has changed. I'm going for a content strategy, larger sites with more content and better quality more relevant links, more deep linking and less websites so I can focus on quality. I have also dumped Adsense and built an affiliate site.

    • Well, looks like I need to get my finger out - loads of work ahead aye

What do you mean by hardcore KW's and the bit about the buffer sites - I've never heard of those sayings ?

Way to go, I've just learned how to insert a quote in this post

if you had links from the big networks and huge number of anchor text direct to your money site, then its usual to drop.
In this update Google took good care of these things
  • I reckon I've learned more on here in the last couple of hours than I've picked up in the last 12 months on SEO
  • Hi Jane,

A buffer site is usually a Web 2.0 site (think sites like blogspot, Squidoo, hub pages, wikipages etc)

You create a mini site on one of these website 2.0 sites and then instead of building lots of links to your main site, you build links to your web 2.0 site instead. This gives you some protection if Google decides to penalize a site for a certain type of link.

As for hardcore keywords, I expect the previous poster was talking about very competitive keywords (either that or porn keywords, LOL).

    Cheers,
    Suzanne
    • [ 1 ] Thanks
  • Thanks Suzanne - I presume if you produce a Web 2.0 page, you link from that page out to your main domain ?

What sort of percentage of link building do you apply to your Web 2.0 pages as opposed to your main site ?

    Cheers
    Jane
  • For current blogs, I'm only looking for upwards of 1000 exact searches for my main KW and upwards of 400 for my 2nd and 3rd KW's ... not sure what 1/20 million is ?

The KW on my old site which you know of was just by chance - I didn't even do any research, it was back in the time when the internet was still quite young ... people just starting to use it.

I don't think Google was even around then - the SE was ... I can't even remember its name, think it began with the letter 'A' ... and then came Yahoo.

I just put together a site and it was just by luck that I found the site after typing in the term I've discussed.

Obviously since then, I've put more time into keeping it there and put services relating to it on my site - that led me onto building more sites but the one in question is my main 'money' site.

Page 5 - has it shot back up again ... last I looked it was about page 38

    Thanks
    Jane
  • Jane,

I won't go into your penguin issues, but I think you may also have or end up with panda issues for your photography site.

The user experience isn't very good imho.

The html code that the site is based upon is awful.

I strongly suggest you use a better more html-friendly theme.

Another possible "spammy" problem is that you use the word photography too many times in your onsite linking and navigation.

Hope this helps a little at least. Nothing much will happen for the better unless you make some changes.

    Cheers,
    Sam
  • Sorry to hear about your site Jane but hopefully with continued good content, use of anchor text and all the stuff mentioned above should do the trick.

So many people have been affected by these updates and many have been ruined. Your on the right path at acknowledging the poor performance on your site (traffic and revenue ) and getting the right advice to sort it all out.

    Good luck!
    • [ 1 ] Thanks
