All keywords on page 1 of Google in 1 week with no backlinking

I thought I better share this as it has taken me by complete surprise to be honest and I still don't fully understand it.

Within one week all of my pages rank on page 1 of Google for my targeted keywords without doing any explicit backlinking. This is what I did:
  • Registered a new brand name domain
  • Installed Wordpress and the changed the permalink structure to: /%category%/%postname%/
  • Created 10 posts and an 'About' page
  • Created the following social accounts with the same brand name:
    1. Facebook
    2. Twitter
    3. Linked In
  • Added the site to Google Anlaytics and Google Webmaster tools
  • I linked the Twitter account to Facebook so any Twitter updates would appear in Facebook and Tweeted some of my new posts.

The only links that were created were in Facebook, Twitter, Linked In and a few niche forums / blogs I participate in. The incoming links that were created as a result of signing up to Facebook, Twitter etc cannot be from more than 6 domains and most will be nofollow.

Yesterday I logged onto Google Analytics just to check it was working and was shocked to see a steep curve of unique visits. With a new domain it usually takes me months to see more than a handful of unique visits.

I've created a few domains over the years but have never seen this type of response from the algorithm. If anyone can shed any light on this quick ranking phenomena i'd appreciate your views / insights?

I'm not expecting it to last but it is interesting and i'll post any other significant changes.

    Hi Scott
    Are you using EMD's by any chance? I've found that 'most' sites I set up with EMD's hit Google page 1 very quickly but then when Google catches up they tend to fall away.

      No i'm not using an EMD. The EMD sites I have are not doing as well which is strange.

        It stands for Exact Match Domain so if your main keyword is 'blue widgets' then BlueWidgets.com is an exact match domain that in theory will rank easily for the search term 'blue widgets'.

    If these techniques would be good then its great for SEO because We spend lots of time on backlinking and other stuff. Simple we purchase a keyword domain and install wordpress then start sharing on facebook and twitter

      it's not a keyword domain and as I mentioned it may not last, the algorithm may just be testing responses to the content.

    It could be the honeymoon period, a friend of mine had this happen very recently. Lasted for about 3 weeks and then the rankings dropped back a couple of pages and some disappeared. So I wouldn't get my hopes up, but please keep us updated - I'm curious to see what happens

      Yes, this is my guess also. As I mentioned previously I think the algorithm may give some page one time to allow the content to be tested then it may fit it into the SERPS accordingly. I don't know this for sure of course but this would seem to make sense.

    I posted about a similar problem yesterday asking why I was ranking so well all of a sudden for KWs I had not yet done any work on getting ranked.

    In my case it is the tags that are getting ranked well and no its not the Honeymoon thing these posts have been indexed since Feb. But these are highly competitive KWs that I was expecting to spend months on building up (when I got around to it) and now just in like the last 10 days they have moved to page 1 or close without any effort on my part. Before that you couldnt find them if you tried.

    I don't yet know the reason...I'm kinda figuring that googles broken atm

      Yeah, i've noticed one or two other posts observing this phenomena. I think i'll have to wait a while to know if it's anything more than a blip.

      Google's not broken. You have all of the following, which is basically all you need:
      1. Quality content
      2. Keyword optimized website - ranking a TLD / not inner pages
      3. No ad-blocks (positive user experience)
      4. Whatever your trying to sell is under the fold (not a hardcore salespage)
      5. Social stuff (your Google+ account is linked to your website)
      6. Some backlinks
      And besides that, the term might be highly competitive in Adwords but that doesn't mean that you'd have a hard time ranking "organically". Run it through Market Samurai and I see a lot of greens and yellow.



      Your main search terms (1600 searches and 320 searches) are hanging around position 15 which to me is still rather worthless. What matters are the first 3 positions. The rest of your keywords (as far as I can see - I use SEMrush) have too little search volume to worry about.

I have working last 5 months for my site but till i am not getting results in search engine results page. I'm feel sad to my work. Can you share your working style with me?       I'm not quite sure what to add Alina, I haven't done anything out of the ordinary and the development is laid out in my first post.

    Could be a few reasons why you are ranking high:

    1) Personal results
    2) The keyword is not competitive
    3) The keyword doesnt have searches

    what are your keywords? i mean how obscure are they? it wouldn't be hard to rank for something strange that very few people would search for. how well you're ranking for your keywords is largely dependent on how competitive they are.

      The keywords were not obscure.

      I just checked and the boost of positions appears to be over for now which is what i expected to see.

    Usually, Google likes new sites, but on long run, when you start to get ranks to maintain ranks, I can sure the ranks may fallen I had experienced this

      I wouldn't agree with that. Google doesn't have a bias toward new sites. It is actually just the opposite. New sites have to earn the trust of the search engines.

      The thing is, I've had this happen to more than a few sites and after a few days the algorithm will begin to recalculate the site's relevance/authority and the site goes away..... Then comes back..... Then away again. Its totally normal and happens quite often.
