2 OBL's, Same Destination URL, Different Anchor Text...?

Hey guys, I have a technical outbound linking question.

Let's say we have two OBL's on one high authority page, but they point the same URL (in which we have optimized.)

One of the OBL's has optimized anchor text, the other does not.

Are we hindering our SEO efforts by having the un-optimized link on this page? Should be eliminate this un-optimized link, or does it not really matter?

Thank you.

  • I always assume Google's algorithm will devalue the second link to the same URL on the same page. If I have two OBL on the same page, I at least send the second one to a different URL within the same domain.

Or, if the high authority page is a very high PR page - dump the second link entirely. Especially if the anchor text you are using is very important to your SEO strategy.

    • Interesting points, that is somewhat of the thought process I had in mind. Thanks for you input, curious if others will chime in on the subject.
  • I can second that. I can't remember where I read it from, but if you have two links linking to the exact same page, the second won't be worth anything, in fact I read somewhere where someone claimed the second would simply be ignored.

It's impossible to know for sure though, but the value is definitely inferior.

    • See the irony of this guy's auto post here? 4-5 consecutive anchor texts all to the same URL. Total FAIL.
