The Next Move

Right, so I finally finish my last post on my first website ever. I got to the first page in about a week and it's earned me about $40 in these first 2 weeks but my conversion rate is 0.74% against a global 1.22%. It's a 1,000 exact monthly searches keyword ranking around #3 to #8 place. It's a review, affiliate type site and in the last week I decided to add adsense which has earned me some pathetic 40 cents in about a week. I get around 200 visitors according to google analitycs but only 10% of that comes from searches, the rest is referrals.

So WHAT NOW?!!

Should I improve my conversion rate? should I try advertising something else?
How much should I be making from this keyword?
Should I try to rank higher? or is this site pretty much done?
Should I start looking for a new keyword and building a new site?

What would you guys say is the next step for me?

thanks!

    • Has making more posts ever crossed your mind?
Query loves freshness, in many cases.

  • Well, most of the websites on the first page havent been updated in years, it seems.... they just have gazillions of backlinks!
  • anyone else would like to chip in please!
  • Content content content. ...And patience. Once you hit #1 you'll start to see a LOT more traffic.

    • ok, I get it so, push the ranking. Yes sir, back to work, thanks!
  • You mentioned you made $40 in two weeks? That's great for a new site, but then again you said it was only 40cents.

Anyway, create more posts and if you can build backlinks to you site.

    • yes it's still surreal, I knew nothing about IM 2 months ago! It's actually $42 in 20 days from the affiliate review PLUS 40 cents from the widget adsense ads, actually 0.57 cents this morning. So that's 42.57 in a 20 days.

Why more posts? ranking? and how can I do that without putting down my last post which is the review affiliate post? another page?

      thanks!
  • Hang on, where are your referrals coming from? If only 10% of your traffic is coming from organic search I am guessing you are getting social traffic - social traffic converts pretty badly, so your figures are not surprising. If that's the case, you need to be asking how to convert social traffic - if you find out, let me know (though getting them on a list and then preselling them lots is probably the way forward).

    • yahoo answers actually, questions closely related to my keyword get asked about 20 times per day. Kind of targeted I would think, no?

      thanks!

  • In line with what markowe has mentioned, have you tried looking for people who are actually in a "buying mood" and are asking for something about whatever it is that you're trying to sell? It may be harder, but I think that's going to convert more. Another thing would be using your link as some sort of a support to an idea being discussed.

  • I think you should add relevant quality content on your site regularly. Focus especially on long tail keywords.

  • What I am trying to say is, right now the traffic you are getting might just be people browsing Answers, they might not even be looking for the answer to the question you have answered (What is the best... toaster, or whatever), they might be looking for questions to answer, who knows. So they really have no buying intent.

Some way down the line, some of those YA answer pages might start (probably some already are) ranking for "best xyz toaster", and THAT traffic MIGHT start converting.

  • after panda update google said Content is king..
provide more fresh and unique content to your site.
add more inner page with long tail keywords to support your main keywords.
