Can someone help me analyze 2 of my competitors?

I have 2 competitors who seem to be promoting their businesses in 2 totally different ways and its distracting me in my own approach.

One is doing hardcore seo/backlinking/press releases everything you can think about they do it.

Right now if I search "basement waterproofing" (from my location in NJ) this specific competitor shows up as number 1 all the time.

Their site is:

They have something like 13,000 backlinks, are always getting reviews all over the web, I think it will be impossible to ever really compete against them as they are a LARGE company with locations all over the US.

Competitor #2 is the total opposite.

I know the owner as my brother use to work for him. The guy owns a small company, has a total of 6 backlinks pointing to his site, basic stuff like bbb, youtube, twitter, etc.

He barely has any reviews from what I can tell, just 1 on his google places, and a couple somewhere else.

HOWEVER, this guys google places has ALWAYS showed up at the top of the searches.

I have NO IDEA how he does this, because he doesn't actually seem to be promoting his site at all.

The only promoting I've ever seen him do was on a blogspot and twitter account. The point is, he seems to be doing nothing, but HOW is his google places always showing up in search results?

His site doesn't rank well organically, but his google places does.
Here is his site:

His google places:

So my main problem here is WHAT I should be focusing on to promote my website, which is here:

The way I see it, if I try to rank my site organically like the first site, I have a very long road ahead of me.

Yet I see the second competitor has done very little, but for some reason his google places ALWAYS ranks well.

Does anyone know WHY his google places ranks so well?
Someone told me his website has great on page SEO. All I see is a bunch of keywords stuffed in his footer.

I'm not an SEO expert so I don't really know how he did it.
Is it sheer luck?

Should I focus more on ranking my website or my google places?

I know our site lacks good on page SEO, but even if we fix it, I don't see our google places ranking up with healthwaynj.

If this was you, how would you approach this? I'm just not sure if I will have better luck trying to rank our google places, or our website.

I'm rather jealous that this guy seems to have spent no time building backlinks, but still has the luxury of being on page 1.

I just can't understand how he did it. If ANYONE has any idea what this man has done, I could really use some advice. My brother use to be friends with him, and said he always got most his leads from his google places.

How can I get my google places ranked like his?

Thanks - Red

Do you guys even have google places set up?

Why aren't you targeting NJ or "New Jersey" or at least Union City in your home page title tag. I know you say "NJ areas" but no one will really type in "basement waterproofing in NJ and other areas" in the search. If anything you really want to focus more on local and not worry about the guy that has 16000 links because he isn't focusing on local, he seems a bit more branded.

You should also get a custom footer in which you can at least put the address in every page and mention other cities you provide service in for that landing page (maybe on the contact us page). So google can at least notice your website.

And your google sitemaps page doesn't work either. I know last time I mentioned installing analytics. And you did that, it's a good start.

Contact your previous customers and once you get up your google local (places) page set up, ask them to give a review. Not just testimonials. Make it happen for yelp or something!

    Ok thanks!

You know what though I actually just figured out whats going on. I never thought of doing a backlink check on his google places and when I did I found out this guy who owns healthwaynj, he has **200,000,000** backlinks pointing to his google places.

Its obvious this guys google places is ranking from nothing but spamming the crap out of it.

I suppose my question now would be you can't get penalized for this?

His google places has been ranking for years he has 6 backlinks pointing to his site, then like I said about 200 million pointing to his google places.

What a shady shady guy. I guess if I want to outrank his google places my only hope is spamming the hell out of it.

    Good to know lol.

Can anyone answer this for me please?

It seems to me right now like your google places can't get penalized for spamming?
All I know is like I said this guy as 200 million spammy backlinks pointing to his google places, and keeps making backlinks at the rate of 100,000 a day.

Will google not penalize his places listing for this? He's been doing this for 6 years it seems and it appears that google does not give a damn then about spamming your google place listing.

Anyone who can answer this for me I'm really dying to know, thank you!

I'm pretty sure that the backlink checker you are using is just using google's domain and not the specific google places page for that company.

You are looking at backlinks to Google, not his specific page.

I stumbled over this thread by a very roundabout manner, but I do have a couple of observations...

First, why are you giving either of these competitors additional link juice from here on the Warrior Forum?

Secondly... HealthwayNJ isn't even on the first 2 pages (I didn't dig any deeper) when searching from South Carolina, while the other site is still at #1 when searching from here.

Given the emphasis that HealthywayNJ has placed on links to their Google Places it's evident that their strategy for local search placement is working (at least for now).

Since their businesses are brick and mortar, local search is really all that will matter for their business, and HealthywayNJ is getting comparable search results (locally) without worrying too much about on-site SEO.

Lastly, while learning/applying their techniques will almost certainly benefit your own rankings - the real question is where do YOU currently rank (you didn't say).

You might very reasonably be able to rank in #3 position without too much trouble, and if you use techniques from both competitors, who knows???

Take some leads from the competition, but put the primary focus on your own site, and what you are doing - especially with regard to local search.

If you need help i can scan all links from your competitors and report back to you. This way you get a better picture where the sources are coming from and a better idea where to build your backlinks. Pm me for details.

Id also like to add, most people get away with nofollow links. More submissions done this way to achieve better rankings on google. These links include wiki links, .edu links and etc. Believe it or not but this does help with rankings and improves your positioning. If you want you can try this out for yourself, your site wont get penalized.
