Penguin Poo

Let's say you have a brand new site which has no ranking and you want to start to get it into the top 10 positions for your keywords...

How many backlinks are enough so Penguin doesn't poo all over you and banish out your chances to get ranked

There's so many services out there to pick from, but the "overkill" methods are a thing of the past with the new algorithm

Based on your understanding of the new update, what say you?

  • As always, it depends on the number and the strength of the competition. There is no "formula" for X amount of links = Y results. Just make sure the backlinks are done manually and naturally as opposed to someone using their tool or software, as this is what I believe Google is penalizing above everything else.

    • I'm not so sure that this is the right equation Angela...

If Google wants to make sure that backlinks are done "manually" then how many would someone do in a day, let's say on average?

      I say the answer is about 10 a day = 300 a month.

However if you're competition (in the top 10) is spitting out 50 or more a day consistently then how does this mesh?

  • As Angela rightly pointed out. There is no specific formula or algorithm for this. The trick is to ensure that the back-links you have are relevant and of good integrity. Google are constantly striving to improve their quality and the only way they can do that is by you helping them help you. JMO

  • I have been having trouble determining competition but as for your question I would go with a wide variety of links to both home page and inner pages, I would also vary your anchor text and use your basic URL form for anchor text too. This should keep you from penalties and look natural.

    • Strong site optimization. Then classic link buidling with social bookmarking, Web2.0, article directories, press releases, video etc. Add in some social proof i.e. Pinterest, Facebook, Twitter...
Vary up anchor text for text link diversity.
  • It depends on the strength of the sites on the first page. If the sites on the first page are less then page rank 3 then it might take just a few weeks to months. If they are stronger it can take you years. There are manual ways and there are tools you can help. You can find a lot of info on this in the SEO section.
