Multiple adsense ads

Is there only so many adsense ads you can have on your page? I had a square ad on my page, and nothing else. I kept getting these messages from the optimization team telling me to add more. So I put a small banner in my header and in between posts, but then the square ad disappeared. Can you only have so many of them?

The maximum ad unit that you can have is three a Link unit and a search unit. if you put too many than the required ad units then one of them will not show any ads. but don't put more than what the TOS says just to be on the safe side.

you can place 3 ad formates to any page.

and also, its not very nice to look at a blog who have plenty of ads in it.
