Backlink Advice - Post-Penguin Spank

all of my kw's were spanked by G (it's just a personal blog - not selling anything) - you know, the unnatural links msg in GWT.

Since then (a few months ago), I stopped all link building efforts. I went from first page for a few dozen kw's to completely off the search results.

I'm still indexed, however.

I have access to a private blog network that's the real deal (still indexed, hidden, looks legit, no footprint, etc.).

Here's my question - do I build links to the sames kw's that G spanked me for or do I shoot for new ones?

Somebody has to have made this decision recently. What do you recommend?

Obviously the easy answer is just to use new kw's. But the problem is, I used up all the good ones already and got spanked for them all.

Any advice? Thanks!

D.J.

Have you tried doing what was recommended in that message from Google Webmaster Tools? If you have control over those unnatural links, you can remove them. If not, you can still continue building your keywords, only that you should follow the guidelines a lot stricter than what you've done before.

If there weren't 12k indexed links, I would. Thanks for the advice!

  • Did I read that right? You were getting unnatural links? If so that's your problem.

Try giving away valuable content for natural links. That's the only full-proof plan that will outlast every Google update.

Are those kw worth it? If so, then I should go for it, as long as you dont have thousands of backlinks from rot neighborhoods.

The thing you need to do is to relatively reduce your main kw as anchor. Pre penguin we used to aim for 100% kws as anchors. Now you should aim for 20% top. So you need to build a lot of links with other keywords so that your main kw account for 20% of the total.

That is the strategy I am using right now and it is working. My main kw was 1 before penguin and then I was smashed to page 50. After one and a half month I am at page 5.
