If I submit an article which becomes popular and is thus shared around the internet with my backlink attached will that hurt my rank ? If my article suddenly results in me having 100 new backlinks all with the same anchor text won't that look sus to Google Penguin algo ?

Probably not because it will be shared by people from different countries with different IPs in different time.

But I think it will not happen. They will just copy and paste your content without link .

Agreed. Chances are this article is not going to be picked up by 100 sites unless you are posting the article on a popular website. In this case, it is completely fine for it to get picked up by many sites.

I don't think it would be hurtful. Big G must have its way to identify and reward those quality contents which can get natural backlinks. So don't worry about it, as long as you get backlinks naturally, you will be fine.

It won't hurt you rankings, but do not submit the same articles in different article directories.

This will not hurt your site. This will help your site.

    • Article submission can only help your site. The more popular your article gets, the more people will visit your site and share your content. This will result in more traffic and inbound links.

Article submission can result in negative SEO if:

    - Spun wrongly except if the sentences, paragraph etc can be spun which will definately take min of 5hrs and still isn't a surefire that you will get readable piece.
    - Scraped content is used

Technically, yes it will help you boost your ranking in SERP because it will be shared and you will be getting natural backlinks.

However, just like tiiberius has said, people might just copy and paste your article without a link back to your website.

Google has spent enough money to know your thoughts (being sarcastic)..surely they'll know if your article became popular naturally or not.

Well, this is not actually going to hurt your rankings as these backlinks will be the natural link building or link bait which might or might not boost your rankings but it will never bring your keyword rankings down.

firstly your article won't suddenly results in SERP with 100 new backlinks with the anchor text .Make sure you submit to high ranked sites, this is a great method to increase your traffic but use only original content.

I don’t think article submission can hurt your ranking, article directories use syndicated content so it won't hurt your ranking. It would be better if you submit unique article only

There is a good chance that it will hurt your rankings, especially when the sites where your article is posted are identified as part of a network of sites.

Having said that means you have a great article to post. Try to submit the article on web 2.0 properties and try to rank it for its keyword. I see a lot of squidoo lens ranking for some competitive keywords. And I don't believe article directories are good place to build backlinks. That's just my opinion. Also you should consider guest posting.

If you have 100 new backlinks with the same anchor texts and lets say you have 140 total backlinks. Yes, its possible for penguin to step in. But if your anchor text is a brand name or URL, maybe not? Also if your site is aged and have good amounts of quality backlinks, maybe it won't get flagged. Try to have a look at the backlinks of diff. sites that are ranking, compare them to your site and backlinks. Maybe you'll get a better picture.

What you are describing is article syndication and that is a very good thing. Not only will it not hurt your rank, it will be bringing more targeted traffic to your site through other traffic sources other than a search engine. Also, that type of traffic is known to have better percentages of buying visitors/customers.

If you use automated tools like AMR, especially if you auto spin your articles, it is very likely that these links could hurt your site. So your answer is yes.

Don't use spun articles. This is a wave of the past, Google will eventually punish links on spun articles if they aren't already.
