Guest Posting SEO Benefits

OK so i've been chatting to the guys in the article marketing section and have learnt that you must post articles on your own website first before posting on others and article directories. This effectively notifies (in some respects) Google that your website is the original source of the content.

I was wondering, do you get less link juice from your links in published guest posts if you don't post them on your website first?

You don't have to post to your own site first. It depends on your goals. Many of us prefer our own sites to be the one Google recognizes but that doesn't fit into every business model.

No, you do not get less link juice if you don't post to your site first, but neither do you get more by doing so. Where it is posted first should not affect the link at all.

What I was thinking, whether I post the article on my website first or not it is still a backlink I have on their website.

Hmm this is an interesting question- If writing for web 2.0 websites like Squidoo and Hub Pages I always write original content, because they will remove your page if they find that you have duplicated already published copy. The same applies when guest blogging- blog owners will only publish original work.

But I don't actually know the answer when it comes to article directories... I will be interested to see what everyone else thinks about this- I might have been taking the wrong technique entirely! I always assumed that original content is best wherever you publish it first...

Yes It is obviously going to be beneficial if you're always writing unique content, but by posting it on your website first and anyone picks the article up from article directories etc then it is you website that will benefit as it is the original source. All the benefits of syndicated articles go to the original source.

If your original source is Squidoo (because you posted a unique article there first) and someone copies it from your squidoo then it is your squido that will benefit, all others get discarded.

What I'm lead to believe anyway.

The same article? Surely you are not using duplicate content? That is a HUGE mistake if you are. Never, ever re-use duplicate content.... EVER!

The best thing you can do is write (or outsource) high quality articles (stuff for the reader) to use for guest posting. This is a very effective strategy!

In guest posts, there are duplicate articles many times.

Some sites want unique ones, but it doesn't seem the be the norm for every single niche.

I get lots of traffic from duplicate articles on other sites where users read them and click through to read the rest of my website. I don't see how it's a mistake at all.

It isn't duplicated content it's syndicated content.

      Duplicate Content
Content re-used on the same website/domain.

      Syndicated Content
      Content used on other websites.

You can't stop people using you're content and the sole purpose of an article directory is to provide people with articles to pull, it's unfair for Google to penalise you for this.

The benefits of submitting the same article is that you post it on your own website first, this tells Google your website is the original source of the content.

You wouldn't post a duplicated content on someone else's blog. The owner of the blog would not want that to happen. I think you are talking about syndication?

It's better if you create unique content for your own site and for guest posting purposes. Not only are you not going to worry about possible violations but you are adding value through your posts. Also, blog owners don't appreciate publishing posts that are already in the web so you might find it hard to get it approved.

As far as I know, HubPages requires unique content but Squidoo doesn't (or at least, didn't used to).

You're wrong about guest blogging. Some require unique work but not all. And you are confusing the terms 'unique' and 'original'. If you post an original piece on your own site and then someone allows you to use that piece as a guest post, it is no longer unique, but it most certainly is still orginal.

You are wrong, also. Whether content is duplicated or not has absolutely nothing to do with its value.

I'm sure that Squidoo requires unique content as well- I have had a lens removed for having duplicate content.

Who in their right mind would allow a guest post that is duplicate content?

If your posting duplicate content as a guest blog post, why do they need you (they wouldn't) when they could copy/paste content just the same as you can.

IMO, If your guest post isn't unique, you have nothing to offer.

      Nothing to offer?

Good content is good content no matter how many times it's printed or posted.

I have webmasters who add my articles as guest posts knowing that it's duplicated elsewhere. These webmasters want their readers to get good content and I am providing it for them.

I get great traffic and some good backlinks from this which makes it a great relationship.

        Picture this:
        1. I own a blog that accepts guest blog post.
        2. The only thing you have to offer is duplicate content.
        3. Why do I need you?

I don't care If you wrote the Declaration of Independence, If it's duplicate content I can copy/paste it myself, I don't need you to be involved.

I think your confused with content scraping, which isn't the same as guest blog post.

Copy paste from where? Content scraping? Confused?

I am talking about sending webmasters content via email where they are posting on their blogs. They post it as a guest article with my name and site mentioned. These are real examples of something that I have done successfully.

The need comes from the fact they have readers that they want to offer good content to. This works exactly the same was as it did when newsletters were much more popular. The readers get something of value and will stick around reading the site while the webmaster SAVES TIME not having to come up with everything original. It's a win, win, win situation and it happens all the time.

It seems as if you are talking about hypothetical situations while I am trying to share my experience.

I would suggest trying the strategy and seeing how it works out for you.

Guest BLOGGING works, but forget about article marketing through directories.

Keep in mind that guest blogging doesn't mean joining some "blog article" exchange service. Those are lame, and don't bring the results you are looking for.

Real guest blogging can have HUGE results for your website, in both backlinks and traffic. My recommendation is to start small, find blogs related to your niche and have a decent PR and a little bit of traffic. Basically "C" list blogs. Reach out to these blogs and tell them you've got an amazing post for them, and was wondering if they accept guest posts. Most "C" list blogs would LOVE free content and will publish your post.

After your post has been posted to a few "C" list blogs, head over to the next level blogs. Those in the "B" list, you know higher PR, more active community, etc. Reach out and tell them that you've written guest posts for the C list blogs, providing examples and that you'd love to do the same for them. You'll find a few who accept.

Rinse and repeat your way to the TOP blogs in your niche. Now you've got a ton of coverage, links, and reputation within the community and have started to build a community on your blog.

Guest bloggin can be extremely effective.

      • Most bloggers won't accept guest posts that have been already published on your site. If you use sites like Squidoo, Hubpages, or Yahoo Voices, you have to submit unique content anyway. Eventually you can write a few guest posts and ask the blog owners if you can republish the articles on your site.

To be honest if you're in any doubts you can't go wrong by doing unique content each time. It may start to look unnatural to Google if you sudden gain lots of links with the same content.
