Long term - rank multiple pages for the same [exact] keyword.

Even If a single page only shows up in the SERPs per keyword, you'll still have authority that competition won't know about (internal page authority). Most people only look at external links (fail), take advantage of that fail.

    Mostly agree with yukon.

Make a big authority site with hundreds and hundreds of pages that are ranking for longtails with lots of very high quality/high PR links (manual blog comments, high quality 2.0s, microsites) and then use the internal linking of those 200+ ranking sites to push you up to the front page.

This is very expensive to do but you will be funding a lot of your link building with income from ranking for the longtails. Also then when you get around to actually ranking with a lot of internal juice you'll have a fleshed out site that could pass a manual review and doesn't have a really shady link profile.

IMO..Even for difficult keywords - things are looking pretty easy to me as most of the heavy spammers have been knocked out but there is just crud left behind floating at the top of the serps for some cracking keywords..

Some of it is bad i.e; alot of spammy forum profiles and the rest are spamming domains then 301 to a new site, it's seems to be working for some people, but this won't last forever, so in that respect - build links that will stand the test of time and build a site that a Google employee would be impressed with.

It would seem the best thing to do is very little in terms of off page seo - just to focus on quality in particular links that will stick with little or no anchor text and good site content that people will be happy with... stay consistent and if you do go on a spammy mission, make sure to have a contingency plan.

good pointers above, build out your site content, rank for multiple long tails, also if you are trying to rank your homepage for a big keyword you will want to target many long tails in anchor also, go after the small fish first while getting the bigger fish at the same time.
Focus on your homepage would be a start, but dont neglect the inner pages,
if you have 'keyword' you want to rank that is big competition
go after; 'keyword' + best, + country, + city etc also.
In long run you want a large referring domain portfolio, varried anchor texts, and high authority link wheel will help.
We have been able to out rank large businesses in the SEO keywords (5,000-10,000) monthly in about 6 months, as well as top rankings for massive keywords of 120,000 search a month using proven methods (those are exact search numbers!)

there has been some correlation between paid ads and increase in natural rank, though you want a high CTR on the paid ads - also a great way to check if its worth going for that keyword based on convertions!

    but yes to sum up:
build your site content quality and multiple posts,
build strong links to all of it, focus on homepage
and keep at it for a long term strategy. (that is if you want to keep your rank once your get there!)
