Usually when I get into a niche I analyze the competition first, to see if it's possible to get a decent positions in the search engines. So I like to stay away from the most competitive areas in order to rank well in the search engines. This approach only applies to organic search results.

But this time around I want to use PPC so I want be dependent on SEO. So correct me if I'm wrong but, in this case it doesn't matter if I get into a highly competitive market, because I will still end up with a good position since I'm gonna use advertising. Right?

So in this case I don't have to check competition and could get into all the high competitive areas like weight loss, dating, gaming etc. I know I'm gonna get ranked well anyway...

This is my thoughts about this...I have have no previous experience with PPC.

Also I guess keywords research will be unnecessary when using the PPC approach.

You still have to check on your competition even in the PPC world. PPC isn't just about the highest bidder. It is also about ad quality score and the ad relevancy to the term you want it to appear prominent. Even if you are the highest bidder for a term, your ad listing can still get kicked out of the sponsors box if it doesn't exhibit quality and relevance to keep it in position. In other words, the first ad position in the sponsors box isn't always for the highest bidder, but for the ad that complies to the three goals of the PPC market.

      Hi BoJon,

While the marketing methods are different for PPC as compared to SEO, many of the same principles apply. After all this is still marketing in a competitive marketplace, and good markets are always competitive.

I have always thought that the idea of strictly looking for markets with low competition to be generally bad advice. What you want is high profitability with "relatively" low competition, as it relates the profit potential. If you focus strictly on low competition you generally find yourself in poor, very bad, or even non commercially viable markets.

If you are still at the stage of choosing a market niche then you should look closely at the competition, particularly for the keywords you plan to target. If you are looking at a low margin item and plan to compete against competitors that have much better margins than you, it will be tough to find profitable keywords. Likewise, if you choose a market that has competitors with high ticket items, that sell in volume, and you want to compete for the same keywords with lower volume item, or low priced items, you simply will not be garner the same ROI and will be pushed out of the marketplace for the best ad positions.

It is essential to consider your competition for PPC marketing, though you shouldn't simply dismiss a niche because it is competitive. It is competitive for a reason, it means that many marketers have found a way to make a profit, and you can be sure to make a profit as well as long as you can devise a clever marketing strategy.

So in this case I don't have to check competition and could get into all the high competitive areas like weight loss, dating, gaming etc. I know I'm gonna get ranked well anyway...
Actually those are poor choices for PPC marketing, most Ad programs have policies regarding those niches, that either prohibit or severely restrict how you can advertise those type of products. In fact, that is why you see those particular niches often in affiliate marketing, as they are generally taboo for legitimate ad programs. Thus the only viable way to market most of the products in those categories is via the unregulated organic search engine listings.

So many of the evergreen niches are poor choices for PPC, that's to bad, becasue the reason that I really can't use organic search is because I want to create a squeeze page for the niche, and as I understand SEO traffic rarely works on a squeeze page because there's not enough information for Google to index.

So this means I have to go for another niche when using PPC...
