You only need one website to promote physical products. My suggestion (it's how I do things) is to not target popular stuff since everyone and their grand-mom is doing that. Instead, promote stuff that nobody else is. Doing so will allow you to rank more easily and will require little to no backlinking whatsoever.

Also....Make sure you stick with stuff you know something about. If you know nothing about baby monitors and strollers, don't promote them. And for the love of Pete, don't just scrape Amazon's info and stick it on your site. Your visitors have probably already been to Amazon anyway.

When I build a site, I stay within a niche and each post is a review of a separate product. My sites generally consist of 50-100 reviews, some smaller. Since my strategy involves lower competition products, I don't have to do any backlinking. I generally rank very easily with very little effort.

    A few pointers:

    - First and foremost, do your keyword research correctly because you don't wanna end up putting a load of effort into a site only to realise that the niche isn't as profitable as you thought or even worse that the competition is so tough that it can make it difficult to rank at all for your keywords. Try to come up with a keyword which is what your whole site will be based on such as "computer monitor reviews" or "best gaming microphone" and then also try to find a niche where the individual products which you'll be reviewing get a decent search volume for their keywords - "product name review". For product keywords you can go as low as 15-20 exact searches per month because someone searching that specific is likely to be near the end of the buying cycle.

    - In terms of what products to pick. Avoid electronics because the commission is capped at 4%. Try to aim for products which you think people would be comfortable buying online ... for example most people will be OK with buying maybe a computer component (electronics I know) online because it's a standard piece of hardware. However, something like a guitar which some people are more suited to than others may be more difficult to sell online as people would perhaps like to try it out in a store before buying.
Also, in terms of price point I would aim for $70-200 although a good mix is a decent idea.

    - Amazon give you more commission if you sell more units. So when you tell about 6-7 units of ANY product you get moved up to the next commission % tier, then when you hit 21 unit sales you get moved up again. For this reason it's a good idea to include some $5-20 products which you can sell many units of purely because it will move you up through the commission tiers to the max of 15% so that you'll receive 15% on EVERYTHING that you've sold that month.

    - Remember, no matter which of your affiliate links someone clicks on, you get commission on ANYTHING they buy within the life of that cookie.

    - One thing which I cannot stress enough is to ensure you provide true value to those who are visiting your site. Google are cracking down hard on sites which just aim to get a reader to click through to Amazon to get sales. Your site must offer something, there must be a reason for the person to visit your site - for a review site (and I would recommend doing a review site for Amazon products) this reason is that you provide an honest, unbiased and accurate review of a product in order to help the reader decide if it's for them or not. Don't say every product is fantastic in order to try and get people to buy - it's dishonest and not providing proper value to your reader - above all else it's a quick way to tarnish your sites credibility. Research thoroughly and ensure that your reviews are an accurate representative summary of the views of the actual customers of the product who left reviews on Amazon.

    - That's it off the top of my head. Do your keyword research correctly, provide real value to your readers and make sure that you have a solid backlinking strategy and I'm sure you'll start to reap he benefits of that Amazon love like the rest of us.

    Good luck!

with amazon you will want to build an authority site,
focus on a large niche, things like consumer electronic, jewels, dvds, games, etc you can make a site for each large topic. Check the amazon best sellers list, things they are selling well will be things that you can sell well also.
Build quality content, dont automate it all, it wont help you much, get good original reviews, and build strong backlinks, its easy to rank for PNK (product name keywords)

Just to add to the great advice already given, make sure it's obvious and easy for visitors to get from your site to Amazon. You want them to be able to click through the moment they get the urge - visitors you've put in the buying mood often convert very well on Amazon.
