What is the favorite backlink checker you use to check your competition? So, it can't be Webmaster Tools...

      I have used SpyGlass but it takes a long time for analyzing each competitor. Maybe I am just not using it correctly. What are the factors you notice the most when it comes to their backlinks? To me PR and nofollow-dofollow of the backlinks are the most important ones to check, but there are too many factors there that can be useful. BTW, it also returns only 1000 backlinks. When it comes to very competitive niches similar to what I work on, it doesn't say much about your competitors backlinking strategies. I still have understood some interesting things from it, like some niche paid high PR directories that I didn't know, but I guess it should be a lot more to it than what I already use....

        The free version only shows 1000. The paid version is only limited by your computing power. I often pull 20,000+ backlinks for sites.

        It does sometimes take awhile to analyze if you are pulling a ton of links. Use some proxies and it will speed it up. Most of the hangup is usually pulling PR and getting blocked by Google.

        I like OpenSite Explorer, Majestic, and Ahrefs too, but the big thing I like about SpyGlass, and part of the reason it takes awhile to pull backlink info, is that it visits the site the backlink is on to see if it is still there. OSE, Majestic, and Ahrefs only update their databases once a month or every few months. So with SpyGlass you are getting more up to the minute data.

        I'm not sure why you think SpyGlass doesn't give you much information about a competitor's backlinking. It gives you more information than anything else. PR, nofollow, is it live, % of anchor text, % of text links, % of image links, the number of other external links on pages where backlinks are (highly important), IP breakdown, how many links are from sites in Dmoz and Yahoo directories, and more. I'm not sure what other information you could want really.

          Thanks a bunch... I guess the most important thing I am really missing is the paid version. Because of the high competition in the niches I pursue, 1000 backlinks doesn't say as much about competitors strategies as it should say. Useful but not enough. In some of those fields, my strong competitors have over 50,000 backlinks so I should get the paid version...

            And to check that many links, you are probably going to want a computer with about 10 GB of RAM. Or analyze links in smaller chunks at a time.

    Cheking backlinks is abolutely availvable. My favourite backlink checker is Open Site Explorer, it works best with a paid account, but it is also a free tool.

    I prefer to use Backlinkwatch.
    Advantages:
    >Inbound link URL is available
    >Link anchor test is available
    >Inbound link page PR is available
    >Inbound link page OBL is available
    >Marking follow/nofollow;
    >You can click anchor text to 'further' analyze the keyword competition to improve your ranking.
    Disadvantages:
    >The functions are not as comprehensive as Open Site Explorer
    >The multiple links from one same URL is shown, so the results look a little more than Open Site Explorer.
