I am trying to find out answer to this question - Does high number of backlinks means high PR ?
As I have found sites thousands of backlinks but having 0 pagerank while many have very few ( below 50) and having 4 or more pagerank. Even mine is new having very few backlinks ( though I am trying for getting more pagelinks - high quality ) at iknowvations but page rank is 1.

So what do you think ? What is the secret behind high PR ?

    Short answer: No.

Long answer: Google can discard as many links as they deem irrelevant or "shady" so quantity is a bad goal. Aim for quality.

      Agreed!

One important point is to have links on pages that doesnt have too many others links. Discard comments links, as long as when you find places with dofollow you are going to have other 1.000s of links at the same page and it doesnt pass any page rank

Quality is more important than quantity. You have to have good quality backlinks along with good number of traffic for getting Google PR.

No not at all lot of things depends when you want to get the page rank only the high number of backlinks are not enough you will have to create the high quality links good hard work in seo, keep working and updating your site. And when your site get more traffic and domain gets older then google will update your pr. So do not just consonstrate on the quantity of links go with the quality of backlinks.

To gain PR you do need dofollow links and yes, a lot of them. However, spamming auto approve PR6 pages with your links will probably help you very little. Just think how mnay other mindless spammers are filling that page. Your link will be one of hundreds if not thousands. All these links dilute the link juice passed to your site.

Ideally you want to be one of 10 on a PR6 page. Get 10 of those quality links and you will probably see PR4 on your site in the next update.

Always aim for quality not quantity.

      How PR Works:
Every web page has a natural page power. This page power is ultimately created by users. Every user carries with them a tiny amount of power. With each page they visit they drop this unit of power and this is repeated for every page they visit. Case in point, youtube.

Youtube gets literally millions of daily visits and if all the worlds youtube links were removed, youtube might drop one PR point but the huge amount of users is basically powering their link juice and PR. You can see this effect all over the net, just look at big sites and their sign up pages. Not many people will link to a signup page, but yet they usually have PR. Visitors caused that.

      What?? That's wrong!

PR is a measure of the quality of links, both internal and external, pointing to a page.

The number of links don't necessarily matter, just the overall quality/authority/PR of them.

Google and major search engines, devote a fraction of seconds for each
page to get deep analysed on each crawl they do. The actual time depends
solely on the current pr that the page has. This is due to the pile of pages
they are handling on the whole web.

If the number of backlinks are so high for a page, processor power that
are dedicated to analyse backlinks and pr, is not adequate to compute the
correct pr at one crawling period unless the page has already enough pr.

Note that exact pr evaluation, programatically needs serveral loops and
    iterations to be done.

A Page with thousands and millions of backlinks, needs several weeks, months and
even years to get the correct pr if the page is pr0 or pr1 for the moment.

Yes your are right of course. I simplified it a little for this post, the overall affect is ultimately determined by users though. Afterall they determine if your page is relevant for the content or not.

I removed the over simplified info.

High number of backlinks don't mean high PR.
Google update PR twice a year. So build links in high PR sites and wait for the update.

The answer is no, Quality of the link is what matters and not quantity.

Yes its quailty and relevance of the links - that is what we are lead to believe.

However what I find interesting is that people can buy an aged domain with say a PR of 4 and there are no backlinks at all (one of my competitors has this). It is only 6 months old a handful of backlinks now but still PR4. There is little content too!

    Strange.

Google looks at both unique content and quality of your backlinks. I have a client with PR5. It went from PR0 to PR5 within a year without any backlinks. The site had tons and tons of unique content though.

Actually its not with the number of links. Its with the quality of links. And very important factors are age of domain, visitors and reputation. Get your website listed for some keywords in Google top 3 positions and you can see a hike in pagerank. Also, work on getting backlinks from websites with 3+ pagerank, this way, you get reputation that also helps in pagerank.

I agree with most of the people that have replied to this thread. High quality backlinks are worth 1000x low quality backlinks. Make sure to backlink from high pr websites with relevant content. Make sure anchor text is relevant. Don't use too many backlinks from the same ip address. Diversify the type of links (forums, dofollow, wiki, etc.)

Alright this depends, the answer can be no or yes. If you have tons of high pagerank backlinks then the answer is yes. If its spam links or pr0 links then its completely useless. Now if you have a web 2.0 article that's different. The trick is to get high pr backlinks from authority sites and sites that are most popular to google.
