What are YOUR favorite "Post Penguin" tools for keyword research?

Hi Warriors,

I have used a lot of tools for keyword research. Of course I still use Google's Keyword Tool!

Of the paid tools that I have used, I am partial to Market Samurai. I have played some with Traffic Travis and WordTracker too.

I know there are others with different opinions out there and I'd like to provide a thread where people can talk about their favorite tools and why.

Google Keyword Tool:
I like this one because it is free to start with. When I was starting out, free was important. It is fairly straight forward and if you sign in with a gmail account, you typically get about 800 results instead of 200.

I don't think it gives enough information for my taste. Others may disagree with that. I also know that you really need to dig into the information you get to make better decisions.

For Example: You search for a group of keywords and see that according to Google, there is not a lot of competition. You think, "Hey! Why am I the only one to realize the value of ABC?"

Based on that result you start building your niche site and backlinking, only later to find you are up against 30 super-duper authority sites with MILLIONS of backlinks and TONS of PR and every site is at least 50 years old! (OK, maybe not 50 years old, but you get the point!)

You have to know how to dig deeper into the information the Google Keyword Tool gives you.

Market Samurai
OK, I bought this a long time ago because I saw that one of the gurus recommended it when I was starting out. Since then, it has become my go-to application for keyword research.

If you apply the same example above, all you have to do with this tool is check the domain competition. That one check could save you a lot of trouble when trying to find a niche.

I also like all of the helpful features for monetizing and domain search. Overall, I could not be happier with the product.

One negative - Sometimes getting the research results takes FOREVER and the program freezes up.

Traffic Travis
I don't consider myself qualified to go into detail here. I like a lot of things about it for sure. I may report back on my personal finding later.

WordTracker
OK, I do like WordTracker a lot. I think it is really a good tool. My biggest complaint is simply the cost.

You can either argue this way - Yes, it is too expensive on a monthly basis to justify the cost. I can't afford that much! (I generally agree for a newbie just starting out.)

Or you can argue this way - Yes, it is very expensive, but the results and time saved are worth the expense. What is your business worth? (I agree with this assessment too provided your online income is now paying for this tool.)

Anyway, just a few thoughts on a few keyword tools I have had experience with.

Now I know there are TONS of tools out there. I didn't mention more then these four for a reason.

What are you using and why?

All the best...
Darin

The only tools I use for keyword research at this moment is the Google keyword tool (for keyword ideas) and the SEO toolbar by SEObooks (for analyzing competition, page rank, domain age etc).

All of the "paid tools" scrape their data from Google Adwords Keyword Tool (GAKT). The advantage of paid tools is that you can skim through keywords much faster. Especially Long Tail Pro by Spencer from Niche Pursuits.

That being said, I have had the most success by using Google Adwords Tool directly. If you download each CSV report for similar keyword. You can accumulate a list of thousands upon thousands of niche related keywords. I have a tutorial video where I show how to dominate any Paid Tool with the help of GAKT and EXCELL.

I am yet to find a keyword tool that beats Rank Tracker. :p What it does is it pulls keywords out of various sources (Google Adwords keyword tool, SEMrush, WordTracker, Google Suggest, Google related searches, etc.), then looks up competition (the number of search results) for each keyword and calculates the optimum ratio between the number of searches and the competition. This way you can just run Rank Tracker and have a list of highly profitable keywords put together for you.

What I also like about it is that I can later on track rankings for the same keywords as well.

I've been using longtail pro, very very quick way of researching keywords, probably the fastest keyword tool i've used and i've used quite a few.

it's that fast you can easily get shortly banned from google because of requesting too many requests to google in a short space of time.

GAKT tells you virtually nothing about the competition for ranking for a particular keyword. This is a common mistake a lot of newbies make.

GAKT to find some keyword ideas, brad's niche finder to find the difficulty to rank for each keyword.

The Google Keyword Tool is fine when you're just starting out. It forces you to focus on the basics, understand how KW research works, etc.

We purchased Market Samurai and had great success with it, but several months back it really started to slow down for us...to the point that it was unusable. There were periods where it would work, periods where it would not work, etc.

We currently use Long Tail Pro. It's much less robust than MS, but is really fast and gets the job done for us. We could still be banging away on the Google Keyword Tool, but we value our time and it's much slower to not use a tool, IMO. I'm not a big fan of automating content, linkbuilding, etc...but having tools to help with keyword research is fantastic.

I am really loving Ultimate Niche Finder (you can get a discount here on the forum; I do not benefit from this, just passing along info on software I like).

I tried Traffic Travis Pro and found it VERY buggy. Half the time it didn't work right, and I had to get a refund.

Market Samurai - long learning curve and I don't like the way they market it only giving you 7 days to try it out. I tried it and around the 5th day it quit working, as if my 7 days were up. I uninstalled it. I've also heard from many that it's not as good as it used to be and now they charge extra for ranking stats which I find objectionable.

SEO Cockpit, SEM RUSH and Word Tracker and some other very expensive tools look great. But they're .... very expensive!

I know a lot of successful people who use google's tool but it is more time consuming and it probably (?) isn't as good at judging competition as something like Ultimate Niche Finder is. I can't prove that but that's my feeling based on having used some of these things.

LTP looks like it might be a winner but I have not tried it yet.

I also heard about another tool which is web based and $20/mo called jaaxy dot com. Someone recommended it to me but I haven't tried it yet. You can try it out for free but you only get 30 free searches. But at least I don't think you have to download anything...

I use Market Samurai to analyze my top 10 competition for google + any EMD sites
I use SEOMOZ keyword tool to check for difficulty and top 10 results
I use keyword tool (google) for exact searches for local
I use google trends + insights to make sure the keyword has a great future
I use google search with quotations to see what I'm up against

If all goes well, then I hop on the bandwagon.
