Quick question about CPC

Even though it appears as though this is my first post, I had a different account that was unfortunately lost due to extraneous circumstances and instead had to have my War Room membership moved over to this account (kudos to WarriorSupportForum because they did an awesome job helping me out).

Anyway moving on to my actual question: What would you guys believe to be a good approximate CPC for a particular keyword when searching for a niche?

Moreover, would this value be different if the keyword offered a higher number of monthly searches?

To explain, let's say we had:

Keyword A
Approximate CPC: $2
Global Monthly Searches: 50 000

Keyword B
Approximate CPC: $0.50
Global Monthly Searches: 2 500 000

Which keyword would you take and why? Does a higher CPC have more of an affect on your decision than a higher number of global monthly searches?

Thanks in advance for all responses!

  • Be sure to use the contextual tool to verify CPCs.

The best keyword is the one that's easiest to rank for. I mean if you can find keywords with 2,500,000 searches that you feel you can rank on page one for - go for it (hint: you wont)

Be sure to hit exact in the left side of the KW tool so you're not on broad.

There is no average CPC, but I wouldn't touch keywords with less than $1 in the contextual tool, probably preferably way more than that.

    • Yea we cannot say anything unless you give us the exact searches and the real 'cpc' using the google contextual tool and not the keyword tool. If you divide the CPC in the contextual tool by ~2, that gives a nice rough estimate of how much you would be really getting per click.
    • By average I meant approximate, my mistake. I was just using those figures as an example.

Let's say though that you could rank just as easily for two keywords, one had lower CPC but higher searches and the other had higher CPC but lower searches (like in the example). What would you use to make a decision as to which keyword you're going to build your niche site around?
